Default Bike humping?

What's with the bike humping with fixie riders? As if you're not already asking for it by riding in traffic with no helmet, you've got to throw all your weight dangerously forward to present your skull and face to the pavement? What gives? I've got a flip flop fixie/SS and ride it all the time as my commuter. But I've never had an urge to do that. Maybe I'm just not hip enough.

What is the deal with the overwhelming popularity of fixies lately?! Did they re-release "Quicksilver", or is this the result of too many over-crowded spin classes?!

Maybe it's just the need to be different. Now that SS's are so common, all the whackos are resorting to more drastic means

I had a friend in high school that had a fixie. I thought it was cool, but never really had the money or the interest to get one. About 4 years ago I picked one up really cheap and I love it. Now it feels weird to get on a road bike and coast. Give it a shot if you haven't yet. It's a whole new experience.

Anonymous on Bike Snob NYC brings up a good question:

Tryin' to figger this one out... When fixed-wheel skidding, what's the proper form: balls to either side of the stem, or both to one side? And if the latter, is one side preferable to the other -- maybe both nutz to the left to balance the crown in the road? Or does it depend on your frame's alignment?

It's a trend, just like everythign else. I really don't think there is any other way to explain it.

The Good: More people on bikes and less people in cars is a great thing. It keeps people in shape, and in general is a positive thing. I'm sure that some of these people will end up in it for the long run (after the trend dies) and it will only strengthen the cycling community.

The Bad: Many of these guys can't ride a bike for shit. They watch videos on Youtube of NYC messengers blowing lights and think it's the raddest thing ever and attempt to emulate it as often as possible.

I'll admit that I have blown through traffic in downtown, cut lanes, etc. but that is the crap that gives us roadies a bad name.

So that's it. I thought it was the grape-smuggling shorts and snooty attitude and obsessiveness with color coordinatiopn. My bad...

I was going to hop on my fixie to make myself feel better, but now, with Cee's influence, maybe I'll just talk to Smith & Wesson (sorry, long icky day at work)

Agreed, great city with a bike friendly culture. Seeing that video made me think of Whistler.
