My 26 lb, 36 spoked Surly Long Haul Trucker is not exactly a svelte road racer. In fact I could put knobbies on it and tear up the loop with it. So I need something that will make it easier to keep up on the road rides and to do some centuries on.
I've been eyeballing this frame we have hanging up at Adrenaline. Well, we put them on sale and that kind of motivated me to snatch it up before someone else does. Jim gave me the ok to make payments on it ![]() It's a level 3 Lynskey Titanium(HB310R) in my size and in my FAVORITE color(ever seen my truck?) I'm going to build it up with a full Shimano Dura Ace build kit, Ritchey WCS Protocol wheels, Thomson Masterpeice seatpost, Ritchey WCS 4AXIS Carbon Stem and WCS Carbon handlebars. I can't wait! ![]() |

Sounds like a nice build. Should be fun. I would however recommend against the carbon bars, or at least think twice about it. I was doing my research on carbon bars a while back and read many opinions on RBR and Bike Forum.
The compelling argument against carbon bars for me was the strong recommendation to replace bars if the bike were to fall over. There were many others that one did it for me. We can all say that we are careful and never let our bikes fall over, but the reality is they do. I was not excited about the idea of replacing a $100 component every time my bike fell over. The weight difference is not that great between a carbon bar and a top quality aluminum bar. Also the numbers did make since between the extra cost of carbon bars and the weight savings, using the following formulas $/grams of new item and $/gram difference between two items. Just food for thought. By no means the definitive word.

I've been using carbon bars for years on the MTB. I chose them for the vibration killing, not weight savings.
I hear you on the cost of replacement, but carbon bars are a lot more durable than people give them credit for. For this frame, carbon makes sense to me - or maybe ti! |

I'd go with the exact same set up. Aluminum bars will stress and eventually weaken.Everytime an aluminum bar stresses it becomes weaker. Life span of a typical aluminum mountain bike is 5 years. These are numbers from the bicycle manfacturers. Carbon fiber has an indefinite life span. Unless of course it's cracked.

Thanks!
I'm not too concerned about the carbon parts. The stem is actually carbon wrapped with a 2014 aluminum body. The bars I definitely want carbon for the comfort. Do you guys think I should go with the Ti Chris King headset? I think that would be sick ![]() |
