Default Rose Bowl Ride - 6/28

Open invite for after work ride on Thursday, June 28th at 6:00PM round the Rose Bowl.

We will meet at the southwest corner of Lot F. The plan is to ride 2 laps around the Bowl and then head up into the hills for some climbing.

My typical route is to exit the Bowl on Parkview Ave., right on Lida St., Right Figueroa St., St. Katherine Dr., right Inverness Dr., right Linda Vista Ave., left Lida St., left Parkview Ave., to the Bowl. Mileage is about 16, time is about 1 hr. - 1 hr. 20 min. Lot of climbing in the hills.

Are you talking about doing some laps with the Thursday night ride? They are talking about shutting it down, and I can't really blame them. It's pretty much 20 guys who can ride, and 180 who are total freds.

I'm not going to try and ride with them, just doing it on our own. You in for Thursday?

How could they shut down that ride, the thing has been going on for years?

More than likely, hell yeah!

It's gotten out of hand. There are over 200 riders, and a lot of them aren't very competent. It's one thing to ride two, or even three abreast.. when they're going into the oncoming lanes and in the running land, riding 8 wide @ 30mph, it's way sketchy.

Add that to the fact that NOBODY at the f*cking Rose Bowl runs the right direction (even though there are arrows painted on the freakin ground) and it's a recipe for disaster.

The fault lies on both parties, in my opinion.

I just get pissed that 99 out of 100 runners don't understand the concept of running counterclockwise around the Bowl, and that the Police don't do a damn thing about it.

They painted new stripes on the ground but I'm not sure if the bikes are to ride inside of the middle lane or outside with the vehicles. I should call someone at the city.

Yes it is a sketchy ride, but where else can you ride 30 miles in an hour without have to stop at a single light. You should check out the new years ride this January 1. That is a sketchy ride.

Yeah, for sure. The people that are actualy smart and run the right direction are forced to run between the "buffer" lines because they are in the minority and must run againsed the flow of the rest of the runners. It's pretty ridiculous.

I prefer a paceline with people I know, who are competent riders who understand how to ride in a straight line, and don't freak out and swerve if you bump elbows. There are just to many inexperienced riders who only hang on because of the draft.

Jesse,

I hope you got my text message yesterday. I got stuck in a meeting yesterday until 6:30PM. I headed over to the Bowl shortly after that and rode the opposite direction hoping to see you or John. I didn't see either of you so I did one full loop and then headed up into the hills and home.

Hopefully next week I can ride again on Thursday.

I was stuck working, also. I ended up riding from 12:00am - 2:00am doing intervals at the Bowl. Don't sweat it!

Call me old, I can't hang with those guys, even with the pull. I know what you're talking about as far as inexperienced riders, but weren't we all once? Someone needs to school the newbs before the jump in. Lots of fast guys with no clue. I've seen some major carnage out there on account of a soccer ball (twice), and the crowds are just to much for me to take. I like to do my own ride like Brian said, but I also like to ride off the back for a while before hitting the hills.

I wish I didn't work so far away.

You underestimate yourself, haha. If you can do an 11 hour double, you can hang on for an hour @ 30mph.
