I have a question for those of you who are familiar with the area (Pain Freak and others?). As you go up right after the gate, there is a fire road that goes to the right of the road. Also, at the top of the climb, right before you descend to the gate that connects with Glendora Ridge Road, there is another fire road that crosses GMR and continues to the other side.
Does anybody know where these fire roads go? Are they rideable? For a few months I have been thinking about taking my CX bike up there and doing a mix of road/dirt and explore those trails. If anybody has any info, suggestions, or wants to join me for such a ride, let me know. By the way, how many of you out there own a cyclocross bike? |

The trail 1/4 of a mile or so from the gate is the beginning of Monroe Truck trail. It goes about 8 miles up and meets GMR. So you can go up the road 8 miles also and go down the trail. Three miles from the start of Monroe you hit a fork that either continues up or descends down Mystic Canyon. Four miles from the gate up GMR is another trail usually referred to as Glendora Ridge Motorway. It will take you along the ridge towards Garcia's trail and eventually to Azusa. There is no exit in Azusa but I have gone down Garcia's trail on occasion. It will drop you off on Sierra Madre west of Barranca. Garcia's trail is a narrow and exposed hiking trail. I went up Monroe truck trail yesterday and it was very overgrown. I always come down with 2-3 ticks on me during warm days. It's one of my favorite local trails nonetheless. Enjoy!!

Also on the other side of the street we take a singletrack back down, this maybe the one, or not, but we end up back on GMR at the bottom, not far from the first gate. Good, fun trail (Monroe) to climb and the descent ain't to shabby either. We used to have some fairly good size groups doing this, but after getting bombarded twice by the rains we kind of just quit riding it. I'm going to post up a ride there for sometime this summer. It gets hot, but isn't that difficult of a climb.

I really enjoy this trail. The start of the trail is a washed out stream bed with plenty of baby heads, but shouldn't be a problem for most riders. Then a nice steady climb up...Not really that steep though. There are some trees on the lower part of the trail that keep you cool. but less as you go up. If you go down Big Dalton, you get some switch backs...but be carefull there are some lose sections there. I usually ride from the high school, give you a nice warm up to the trail head.

wow, that looks sweet. I've only ridden on GMR on the road up to Mt. Baldy. Didn't realize it had the best of both worlds.

I'm not afraid of either area code! Hopefully we can plan something before it gets too hot! Unfortunately June is already booked.

And I recently joined the club of crossers.
![]() Although I'm oddly afraid to ride the bike. Go figure. I ride road and race DH, but I'm afraid of riding a road bike on dirt paths. Obviously, after shelling out the coin, I'm going to ride it, but with some trepidation at first. Who knows, I find it fascinating, so I may try racing it some day.
