Default Heartbreak 100

Anybody doing this one?
I have never ridden it before. I heard the riding is beautiful, with hard climbs and fun descents. 'm looking forward to it.
I figured it would be good training for The Traverse.

Hi Pilas,

I've ridden the double several times and it's tough. The 100 is basically the hard half of the double

You start climbing right at the git-go; up toward Mt Pinos and then onward to Apache Saddle. The beautiful forest views and just enough fun downhill mixed in along the way are just enough to take the edge off the suffering.

The long descent after Apache Saddle is a blast - it can be windy though and may not be at your back. The 33 should be smooth with nice new pavement now on your way to the rest stop in Ventucopa. Hope you like Subway sandwiches!

Lockwood Valley Rd. is where you hit the rides' namesake climb. It starts at easy and becomes almost imperceptibly steeper each mile. The last portion, Heartbreak Hill, is truly tough. It can be very hot so make sure you have enough liquid. Two large bottles should work but if it gets into the hundreds you might consider a camelback.

The rest of the ride is no picnik as it is undulating and usually windy until you get to the final downhill back to Flying J.

If you use Hammer products, Planet Ultra usually has enduralytes, sustained energy, and gel at the rest stops. I'd recommend using heed, gel and perpetuum.

Good luck and have fun!

Regis and I hope to see you at Rim Nordic this year. Did you race at Firestone-Walker?

Default Thanks for the info!

Good to hear from you!
I haven't seen you in a while. I'm planning on making a couple of the Rim Nordic races this year.
I'm not racing that much these days, but I'm trying to do a few fun races.
I did Firestone and also the Idyllwild Challenge, which in my opinion is the best race course in So. Cal, with 30 miles of tough, challenging, and beatiful riding.
I'm also planning on doing the Traverse, which is a nice chance to race the local trails. By the way, it is your kind of event, with 40 miles and 8000 feet elevation gain.
I hope to see you at the races this year.
Cheers!

My knees are still very sore from the last double, but I still may go do this just for the training.
