Default mountain road hybrid?

so i saw a guy on a bike the other day, it appeared to be a road frame with a short mtn fork and flat bars, disc, slick tires, i didnt see any stickers or anything to hint to who makes it but it was all matte black with red hubs and nipples... anyone seen anything like this before? i recently rode my friends trek OCLV 5200 (60cm) for a week or so. i do not like the way road bikes handle, or the way i feel in the drops, and i want something with a little compliance. id like to do the road rides with friends but i cant hang on the c-dale, mostly because of the small ring and big ass tires. suggestions or ideas? could this be a bike he built himself, and ill have to do the same? thanks for the help in advance!

The bike you saw was probably in this category. I have seen them called "flat bar road bikes". This is a sample from Trek.

Yeah, they're kinda silly. I put them on thinking that I would use the position on the decsents. It doesn't happen!
They are comming off as soon as I can get some time.

Yep, 700cc. Kona call's it their commuter, for racer's that don't want to ride their race bike to work.

Nice. Maybe next year I'll be looking at a new commuter bike. It's gonna be hard to talk me out of the Surly CrossCheck, though.

If you want to ride with other road bikes, bite the bullet and get full-on road bike. Sure, it feels weird after coming off a mtn bike, but you'll get used to it quickly and soon feel as comfortable and responsive (on the road) as you do on the trails with your mtn bike. Riding a nice full-on road bike is a real treat with how fast you can accelerate to speed and hold it. Depending on who you're thinking of road riding with (and what they're riding), I think you've got to go all the way.

PS: How tall are you? Unless you're over 6'2", I can say with near-certainty that the 60 cm road bike you rode was too big for you. If you got a road bike with "compact frame" geometry, and sized properly for you, it should not feel as precarious as it sounds like your experience on the 60 cm was. I'm just over 6'1" and ride a 58 cm. Some riders move up to larger bikes once they're used to riding road bikes, but it's not good to start on bike that's on the larger end of the scale for you. That might have contributed to you not diggin' the ride.

0gravity. im a little under 6'1 and weigh in at 208lbs. i thought a 58 would be right, but my friend whose bike i borrowed insisted it was the right size for me (we are about the same height)... ill look around for a 58cm and try it out, i still really want a road bike, but dont have the cash right now.
