I like them so far.

Only bad part is that it's raining and I haven't really rode the Surly at all

Thanks. I got a little trigger happy with the camera. Hopefully I can figure out how to use it so I actually get decent shots.

Sweet ride, bar tape look very cool. Are you going to use that for cross, or mainly on the ride. The tires look like 1.25 / 1.50 "? But I couldn't make the pictures very big!

Hey Rob,
The LHT looks good! Nice build but that San Jose looks vaguely familiar......... glad she's got a good home!
When are we going to go get it dirty?
I was thinking of a Cross Rig ride at the Fully Loop sometime soon.

Which bike are you talking about?

Both of them have 700x32 tires.

Hi Rob,

Good looking bike. Like that paint job. Those shifters are pretty interesting too. Friction shifters, right? (note: I don't know what I'm talking about most of the time) And, those are pretty thick tires. I forget what you were getting this for? This is for touring, right? Are you doing off-road touring?

Why did you choose cantilever brakes? Is that for mud clearance?

I like the looks of that rear cassette, too. Niiiicce.

Thanks!

The shifters are Friction/SIS downtube shifters. Shimano Dura Ace 9 spd.

They're more reliable than Brifters(STI).

The Surly is built for touring, it's got eyelets for front and rear racks and fenders. It was designed to be for fully loaded touring.

If I go on a long tour I'll bring a set of 29" mountain bike tires to swap them out, the frame will clear them(so will the brakes)

The current tires are 700x32C Panaracer TServ tires. They should do well for on road touring.

I chose cantilevers because V Brakes would not work with my brake levers, there is not enough pull. Cantilevers work well because they are strong, can clear larger tires and fenders and because they are simple and easy to fix.

You take that LHT out on any tours yet?

FYI there's a great article about touring in this month's Dirtrag. Don't know if I could ever go that minimal and extreme but it's great story about being resourceful and DIY'ing.

Thanks for the article, I'm gonna read the whole thing later today, looks like an interesting read.

I haven't toured on it yet, I still need to buy a set of panniers and a rear rack. I've got all my camping stuff already, all ultralightweight stuff. Just need a few more things.

I have been commuting on it to work the last week and a half, I love it.

I also dide a half century the other day from Mission Viejo at Saddleback college down to the coast and up PCH to seal beach. Very comfortable ride, I love it.

I updated the bike with some more bling, Thomson seat post and Brooks B17 Champion saddle with copper rails, I'll get some pics later today.

It looks like my first tour is actually going to be a perimeter tour of Oahu! I can't wait.

After that I am going to do the Pacific Coast starting from Vancouver, BC. to San Ysidro, next to Mexico.
