Default Fixie Ride Thursday 2-15-07

Greetings all!
I am posting this for a friend of mine who coordinates fixie/road/ss/whatever you can pedal events in Orange.
The events are a total blast and extremely low-key, just a bunch of adults riding around on bikes, some kids too though!
Here is his invite and info for this coming Thursdays event/ride:

You are invited, on behalf of a world that desperately needs more people riding bikes, to bring your spouse, significant other, life partner, friend, kids and/or yourself to:
Omega Drive-In
319 West Chapman Ave.
Orange, CA 92866
-Mapquest is the easiest-
for a post-Valentine's Day Poker Run and bicycle ride on Thursday, Feb. 15th at 7:30 pm.
We will ride as a group to see all of the checkpoints, followed by the race.
Rules and spoke cards will be given at the ride, free for all who wish to participate!
Prizes for fastest completion and Best Hand of Cards.
Hope to see you there!

If you can make it or just want to come out and hang out, drop a note and let me know!
You don't need a fixie or a SS road rig, anything will work but man is fun to whip thru the streets on a fixie!
If you don't have a fixed gear rig yet, come out and try one, I could bring a couple plus rumor has it Jose was sighted on a fixed gear road bike last night

I'd meet up with ya'll but I'm way up on the West side. Fixies are definiely getting more attention these days. NPR had a spot on them last Tuesday. I got a chuckle out of the part on "FAMS: Fake-a** messengers."

Oh come on!
You KNOW you loved it, you could not quit smiling!
Now, take that and run it on the dirt thats where the action is! There is nothing scarier than hitting a section where you cannot coast thru it, just banging those pedals all over the place
You did fine, I think for your b-day a fixie is in the works

Sounds like fun. Any idea what the traffic will be like?

Well, I thought maybe we would be riding on some other streets instead of Chapman.

Are you going to this? I am thinking of flopping the hub on my 9-2-5 over to the fixie side.

OK, I now have a fixie and I am planning to do this ride. Can anyone tell me how to ride this thing? It nearly tossed me twice.

Just don't try and stop pedaling to quickly.

Keep your legs kind of loose and don't stop pedaling!

I found that it's really hard on downhills, where you're used to coasting without any thought. But, after getting bucked a few times you'll learn

Hey Guys!
The ride is pretty short- maybe 5-6 miles total-, starting just west of the Orange Circle at the Omega Drive In. The ride will cover the race course so all will know where the checkpoints for the poker run are.

All in all this is just about some like minded cyclists getting together for a little ride, sometimes with or with out brakes!

Thanks for the advice. I guess I should leave the brakes and flat pedals on for now. I have this vision of going down hill and looking down to see my legs from the knees down torn off and flopping around and around still attached to the pedals.

I came down Jamboree the other day and thought my legs would come off.

This was great fun. I would definately do it again. I had to bail on the second lap because I had to be to work early this morning.
Friendly people and the cars were actually pretty tolerant of out little group.
BTW - there weren't that many fixies in the group, just a bunch of people who like to ride bikes. Wish there were more of us in the world.
