Sunday beach ride

There will be a ride from Green River (in Corona) to the beach (HB) on Sunday. Start time will be 8 am. This is a fairly flat ride and goes along pretty quick. We have averaged over 23 mph all the way back, but that is a really quick pace and I dont see that happening on this ride. We usually work a pace line with half mile to one mile pulls. A really good workout. Total miles is 60. We will not drop anybody though. If some of the people want to ride out ahead we will let them go and the majority will help support any of the slower riders with no regrets. It's all about the ride and having fun.

I was going to do a beach ride at the weekend. I was either going to do Sunset beach through Huntington to back bay and back or head up to Redondo and do SM and back.
If I dont get a new road bike on Saturday I'll be blasting along on the Stumpy with 60psi in the tyres .
I'm looking at Trek bikes - anyone got any recommendations?
And whats the deal with Alu Vs Carbon. Is the ride really that superior with carbon?
Right now I'm ready to sign off on a Madone 5.5 but that could be due to the bottle of red I'm in the process of sinking

That is about the best bike you can get. I love that bike, but to many of my friends are on them and I just hate looking like a Team Discovery wannabe group. LOL. I am personally looking at the Orbea Orca, but it's still very hard not to get the Madone.

Carbon vs Aluminum

To me there is no comparison. Carbon is a much more forgiving ride. The shocks and the bumps add up after a while and it becomes very noticeable after a few hours of riding. The [FONT=Arial]aluminum just plain beats the hell out of me. Others prefer it, and say they feel little to no difference. I believe the older you get the more you notice. Aluminum stresses also where carbon will not. Everytime an aluminum bike flexs it incurs stress, and then fatigues, with carbon it doesn't. Carbon bikes that were manufactured 10 years ago are still going strong today with no noticeable problems. Trek does warranty their bikes for life, so if you plan on keeping a bike for a very long time this is another very good point. I've seen a lot more cracked aluminum frames then carbon, but I have seen both break, some over just minor crashes. I'll always go with the better warrantied bikes. Plus the Madone is about the sexiest looking bike out there right now. The personal color options with your name painted inside the clear coat is really sweet too.[/FONT]

i rode the madone 5.2 awhile back,get the madone. very nice riding bike,kwick handling,very smoove on the bumps.when i rode the bike,i ran over the bumps to see how it handled them.get the bike.

I may be talking out the side of my neck here, but that's never stopped me before...

As far as cracking frames go, I think I'd rather be on an aluminum frame that's failing rather than a carbon. If I'm not mistaken (which I might just be), carbon tends to fail rather catastrophically. That is, when it cracks and fails it goes fast and bad. But, it seems like aluminum would give you some warning that stuff was going wrong first.

I did ride a carbon frame when testing road bikes before buying my aluminum frame and I tell ya, if money were no object I'd be riding a carbon bike right now. They're sexy and smooth. Chicks dig 'em.

Thanks for the roadie advice there - I called Trek San Diego and they said they'd do me a deal on a Madone if I decided thats what I want.
The 2200 is a nice bike for $1300 and has carbon seat stays and forks - does this take a sizeable amount of vibration out of the ride?

The Madone 5.2 comes in black as well as team colours - thankfully!

I think the frame is important but is not as impt as the components. If your getting a 2200 with better component than a trek 5000(carbon) with so so component, id stick with the 2200. It depends how much miles your going to be riding every year. If your doing 5-7k a yr then go carbon, if 2-3 k then 2200 is good enough. I have a 2300 with full ultegra and rode 2.5k this yr , never wished for a carbon ... yet

i will actually be in for this ride! One of my favorite rides because it is flat and my bike likes flat roads the best, although it is a great climber!

I want to, but I think it might be too much riding for the weekend. I'm riding Saturday, too. I might if I feel good Saturday night and if my XO thinks it would be alright. I don't like making her take care of the kids too much. It's not fair. So, we'll see.

oh this is just an easy fun ride, you can do it!

all flat, no hills, and if you dont ever lead you can draft and be fine the whole way there

I never said I didn't think I can do it. It's not too much riding in that sense. It's the time away from home.

lol, thats why im glad im not married and have no kids! I guess some day i might have to upgrade to living in a car, then I should have room for a wife and kids. Maybe a van if I have more than 3 kids
