Default Truck hits, seriously injures two bicyclists in Seal Beach

Decided to skip a morning mountain ride yesterday 'cause of the wind and went for a hike at Irvine park with the kids and dogs instead. Nice morning.
By the afternoon I was itching for a ride and the wind had died down somewhat, so I went for a road ride down to Seal Beach. Headwind all the way down, fast return with the tailwind.
Turned the corner on to Lampson and found the Eastbound lanes shut down by the police due to this:

F-ing scary! The front of the bro-truck was wrapped around the tree and the people were down a small rise out of site. It looked like the truck had been going too fast, changed lanes and lost control.
I stopped and talked to some witnesses on the Westbound side. They had thought that the Mom had passed. I am glad to hear she is alive. The 'bro' was taken off on a stretcher with a neck brace.
Lampson is a great road to ride, but the bike lanes are ridiculously inconsistent. Sobering.
Be careful out there!

Seal beach is the wrong place to be riding a road bike.

I hate hearing about this kind of stuff. People need to just slow down a little and pay attention.

wow. Hope both mom and the kid are doing ok.

Never good to hear this kind of story. PCH is in no way the safest place to ride, but people still do, and as unsafe as it might be, still will. It's unsafe for a lot of reasons, primarily because of driver inattention, and if they're not used to watching out for that makes it even more dangerous.

Just hope they're doing ok.

More like thousands.

I ride this area quite a bit and I'm aware of the inattentive drivers in this area. Just to many scantily clad ladies out there.

If the authorities would make it a punishment for hitting cyclists, this would stop. As it is now, very seldom does a driver even get sited even with numerous witnesses.

so true, police said even if they caught the a-hole who hit me it would only be a misdemeanor because I sustained no injury's.

Just because thousands are doing it doesn't mean it's safe. I don't want to start a whole debate on this because I don't think that's what this thread was intended for but PCH is hard to drive on when you have road bikers 3 wide. I know there's a social aspect to riding just like there is in mountain biking but even when paying full attention to the road its scary driving by them as they sometimes are in the actual car lane.
