It would save weight. But on a steel frame that is kind of pointless. I think steel rides better than carbon fiber anyway.

Bianchi seems to agree with you because their new Dolomiti is a lugged steel frame with a carbon fork.

Personally I enjoy steel over aluminum that I had before. Much more forgiving. If you are into carbon, I have heard White Brothers is rather forgiving.

Carbon forks are in a word, ubiquitous on high end steel and titanium frames. Easton and Reynolds are to of the big players in the OEM and post purchase fork market. Check out Independent Fabrication, Lightspeed, Seven, and any other high end metal alloy builders and they'll be equipping their bikes with carbon forks.

The reason is 2 fold. Weight and ride quality. Carbon can be laid up to be super stiff or stupid soft (or any mix between) - depending on the ride quality desired. Plus, and this is the biggy, consumers eat this stuff up. Drool.

i'm a classic steel guy...and i failed to mention that this is bike is meant to be a simple but trick build on a budget

it's a street bike...i doubt it will see much if any open road, but it will get me on some mini tours of LA - you knoow, all of the things i can't do on my SS urban bike

...so yeah, vanity is a bitch - with all that said, i don't need a carbon fork but i thought the black weave would just look sexy on the front of my fresh white powder coated frame
