Every Day Is A New Day

I am a huge fan of Crank Bros.
I have been riding the Quattros for about 2 years, Took me a little getting used to but I really like them alot. Easy in Easy Out, Good Platform etc EXCEPT They squeak sooooooo loud when I am climbing or really cranking, it embarrassing. On a long climb, beside annoying me I feel its annoying the other riders (oh and BTW I like a silent rig) The squeak comes from where the "Cleat Outer Support" see picture contacts / rubs against the actual pedal. I have lubed it a few times and it works for a bit sometime, but then of course then I have slippery pedals etc. SO I guess I want new road pedals. What are you folks riding and why? Edit : Add (thanks for the reminder Brandon): Previously I road Speedplay, liked them a lot, but they floated almost too much, have not tried the Zero yet. Cleats can be a bit fickle too IMG_1722.JPG |

I have yet to get them, but i hear the speedplay's are the best pedals out there. 15 degrees of float, and easy in, easy out.
And they start out fairly inexpensive.

Look KEOs because they are transparent to me. I put them on and forgot about them. Easy in, easy out, loud positive 'click' when you step in, stable, light, came in black, on sale at the time, etc. Cleats seem to last pretty long for me (more than a year), and I only switched them out because I wanted a set with zero float.
I had them on the mtn bike for a while and took them off only because I got too much grief for having 'road' pedals on the mtb.

+1 for the Look Keo. I've been running them for about 1.5 years with original cleats. Install and forget. Zero issues since day one.

One thing with the KEO cleats, best to get covers OR carry a pair of sandals if you do the morning coffee shop rides or stop for lunch, etc etc etc... where you may be walking a bit as the cleats wear out pretty fast.

I've used Keo, the Quattros, and now on Zero's from Speedplay. The Keo's were my fav's but unlike some, I wore out the cleats often - and unpredictably as one hard stomp to the ground can bust em up. I had the same annoying squeak you described, but it was when the quattros blew apart on a ride that I decided on a change. The zero's are okay, the float isn't very floaty - to solve it, they recommend using a dry lubricant on the cleat. I do like the indestructable nature of the metal contact points on the shoes though.

i talked to a bike fitter and a PT. He said while speedplay makes knee pain go away it actually masks the problem due to excessive float. Which in turn makes your feet more unstable due to excessive float (movements). He suggested look and shimano pedals. Its harder to tweak but once its on, it feels more secure with power. Just a thought.

I went with Dura Ace pedals due to the wider platform than the Keo's, less float than the Speedplays (good for your IT band), and that they're less costly in the long run because the cleats are cheap and you can walk around very easily on them. They've been a dream so far.

Re cleats, the float variations for the Keo is red=9 gray=4.5 and black=0.
I am still on my original set of cleats, though I prolly will need to replace them soon. I second the comment about cleat covers. I always use them when walking around. They are slippery and prone to damage if left uncovered.

Thanks for all the help folks.
I ended up buying the Keo Sprints...couldn't justify the $100 more for the 40g less Carbon, especially seeing as I ate a Large Chicken Philly Best Cheese Steak and 1/2 order of fries yesterday... and that was definitely more than 40g ![]() Sean basically said unless your a weight weenie/racer the Sprint are a great deal (especially after I told him about lunch yesterday) I like the Keo ergonomics/design, and story, and they seem to get lots of good review, and the specs actually say why they are QUIET. BTW at Surf City Cyclery they have last years Dura Ace road pedals new for $139 for anyone looking, 3 sets left. I looked hard at those, but decided to go new. The new Dura Ace are definitely sweet too but ~$250 |

Ey maven, i finally had my bike fit with Jason, he's good. Kinda expensive but good.
i had to get new insoles as well since im flat footed. Price was kinda high but its worth it, no more knee pain for me. He was also the one who told me to stay away with pedals that has too much float.. Quote:
