The Roadie Hangout Turns out some mountain bikers are also part-time roadies. Keep all road content here, porfavor.

Default Joining the Roadie Hangout - Kinda...

I decided that I wanted to start putting in some road miles to train for endurance races.

However, I couldn't get myself to cross all the way into the dark side (not yet at least).

So instead, I found this 2007 Schwinn Fastback CX cross bike on sale on Performance's site.

I don't know if I'm ready to don lycra yet, but at least I don't need to buy new shoes and pedals

I figure this bike will see most action on the bike paths in Irvine, occasionally throwing in Peter's canyon and some miscellaneous horse trails. Any suggestions for other rides that avoid cars?

For an initiation ride, head out to Whiting Ranch grand opening. Follow the roadies down Irvine Blvd, north on Bake and into Whiting.

  • Do the usual loop and double back on Bake to home.
or

  • Go back through Whiting, exit out at four corners onto Santiago Canyon road and back home.

Can't you just toss the bike onto the other side and jump the gate? Or is there something more significant in the way?

We lifted our bikes over that gate when it (Whiting) was open. What's the problem?

Nice buy! MTB to road translates more skill and power than vice versa, well atleast in my experience.

Just watch out for jackass drivers.

It's not the lycra you crave; it's the pad the lycra is holding in place!

Nice bike. Skip the shoes and pedals for now and just buy some lycra. Or don't. It don't matter. But your baggies will be flapping in the wind.

Well, since I'm trying to sell my touring/cross bike can I come out on my 29er and play?

Though, I have an itch to build a monster cross 29er Singlespeed with Zion frame that's for sale.

Dam! I'd rather ride Santiago Canyon at night.

Little asian ladies in big SUVs on their cell phones driving sounds scary.

My experience is the opposite. I ride road, track, and MTB. I feel that road provides the endurance basis for all of my riding.

Overall my endurance when trail riding has improved since I got a road bike. I road my hardtail on the road just as much as I ride my road bike now. Dunno why, but the road bike increased my cardio endurance.

Road riding has defently helped me as a rider overall, trails DH, overall endurance ETC.

As far as your pedals and shoes.... who says you cannot use Mtn pedals on a road bike!!!!

I'd like a CX for sure. There are some great rides,

Loop Whiting to AW with the bike path that runs between them.

Theres also a good dirt path from Whiting by Wahoos that runs to the corner of Bake and the rail road. So you can hit up Whiting from Irvine easily

For a biggie you could also hit Peters, ride Santiago Canyon, into the back side of Whiting, down the bike path to AW, cross into LW out at Ridgeline then work your way back over to Irvine on the street (even better drop out onto PCH then had up to back bay then home.
Phew I'm tired thinking about that one. Second thoughts I don't want a cross bike!!!

If you really want to avoid cars, try the Santa Ana River Trail. It goes from HB up to Green Valley Road. The best time to ride is the weekday, on the weekends you get a LOT more people, roller bladers and cruisers (especially by the beach). Plus, plenty of water stops along the way.
