Both of these guys were on the news the other night. After a verbal exchange the good doctor brake-checked them. Once they hit he jumps out and proceeds to tell them to get away from his vehicle AND tells them he's a doctor. One dude has a broken nose with missing teeth and the other has an arm/collarbone injury.
What an a-hole.

unfortunately many of us dirt riders (in LA) use that street on a regular basis to get to trails.

"Regarding the incident reported this morning where a one Dr. Christopher Thompson*, a 58-year-old emergency room physician and resident of the Mandeville Canyon neighborhood, was involved in an alleged road rage incident between two bicyclists, Christian Stoehr and Ron Peterson, on Mandeville Canyon Rd. in Brentwood, there have been some updates." Too bad the doctor wasn't a proctologist, this way he'd know the proper lube to use in prison.
![]() It is hard to believe that people can experience road rage anger to that point, regardless of what "words" were passed between the motorist and the bicyclists.

Just more reinforcement to my desire to always carry one of these on my pack. I just hope I dont end up "using it on myself" before someone else.

Will work for Trails

I saw two Items of interest in this story;
1. The driver seemed to have priors when it came to messing with bikers. 2. These guys were CAT-1 level racers and not recreational cyclists. None of us were there so any opinions are mere speculation. In my experience sometimes roadies can be assertive about their rights and insistent about who should yield. So to assume that a rider of this caliber merely pulled out of harms way and allowed the car to pass would seem unlikely when the outcome is considered. What we may never hear is whether any pleasantries were exchanged prior to the car getting in front of the riders. Further to have enough force to go through the window the dude must have been screaming down that hill. I have been hit a few times on my bike (this year even), and have also gotten out of my car and exchanged blows with fellow motorists. Since this guy was not unaware of the riders something must have had him royally pissed to react in this manner. It is only with morbid fascination that I am curious what the out come will be. Moral of the story, nobody wins a fight and it's far tougher to walk away (especially when you have just got beaten down). |

Not only should they file criminal charges, but they should file with the medical board--he's an ER doc and didn't offer any medical assistance, even after identifying himself as such. The whole thing is not right! Maybe if they come down hard on this guy, it will deter others in the area from doing the same.

Ron Peterson used to be my coach! He coached me to lots of first place wins in plenty of races! He's an incredible guy! An excellent cyclist and damn good looking and damn nice!!
I just heard about this today and am just so sick because of it!! We ride Mandeville Cyn. all the time. This guy sounds like a nut case! An absolute nut case!! There was another incident recently of a guy that matches this guys description shoving a cyclist into the gutter with his side mirror and then hitting his leg and taking off. I feel so sick about this. While I was in Downieville, a beautiful young woman I did a tour with in Italy in 2006 was killed in Tahoe in a solo bike crash. They don't know what happened and no vehicle was involved. She was a couple months pregnant and her trip in Italy was her honeymoon. We have been feeling lots of pain lately and this just adds to it. What's odd is we did a 2 week trip with them and others and it was such a tight group. Even though we didn't speak to them again, they stayed with us with special memories and they had a beautiful relationship! http://www.pbase.com/bajaroad/hillary So Ron is a fantastic guy! Keep him in your thoughts. Yes! we know many of you would not road bike because of this and I often question myself on the road these days. It's not like 10 years ago when I did this.Things have really changed and I see all the changes. Speeding motorcycles on the Malibu cyn roads to very distracted and frustrated drivers trying to hurry up to places they don't want to be! We as cyclists are a small community and in the end, we all relate. Believe me, there are plenty of roadies that can't mountain bike for crap and think it's dangerous and strange. Anyway, there's a lot of pain in the roadie community right now. I was going to hire Ron to get Jeanine in shape for a trip to France we have on October. Rats! My heart aches! ![]() ![]() Ron was an extremely safe and courteous cyclist. The driver apparently passed them on Mandeville cyn. It is a narrow road with many S turns and blind corners. I have no doubt that they moved right and went single file to allow the guy to pass. Most likely they had no choice but to go single file considering how wide Mandeville is. Once he passed, whether there was a verbal exchange or not, they had every right to continue side by side(if in fact they were side by side and it doesn't sound like it in the crash description) down the hill. Two cyclists together can be as wide as a mini cooper. Speed limit on Mandeville is 30 or 35 I think so if they were going that fast, they were legal. It's an easy 4% or so grade going down. I doubt they were going faster. Having done the holiday ride, I can tell you from past experience that it's a free for all to the top and a recovery ride down. That being said, Ron and his friend Chris had stayed with a guy that had crashed at the top and broken his collar bone. They waited for the ambulance with him and I believe they left once the ambulance arrived. Apparently that same ambulance treated them when it came upon the scene coming down. There's no excuse for this. The guy is just insane and I hope Ron sues him for millions and the guy ends up homeless, penniless, miserable and covered with scabs and warts!

These guys knew the car was there, heard him honking, probably moved over, slowed down, and reluctantly let him pass. It just wasn't done quickly or submissive enough for this Dr. rage. Outrageous! Hope these riders heal quickly and they get a nice chunk of change from the driver (Doctor's usually have money, so hopefully these roadies bankrupt him)
