I use the 305 but for the most part always know where I am going. I never really experimented with the viewable map feature on the unit (apparently it doesn't have one). I really like the 305 tho for reviewing ride data and sharing on MotionBased. I think the new 705 has better mapping capabilities - you may want to research it.

The 305 does not provide a map. However you can follow a route that you have loaded into it. When you approach an intersection it would display 'turn right" so you would simply turn right at the intersection. What you would see on the screen is a dotted line that represents your route but without any other data such as lines for streets.

edit - when you see the dotted line you are represented on the screen as an icon (triangle). When you see the icon approach a turn you can figure that it's time for you to turn to keep the icon on the line. {clear as mud, right}

The 705 is a full-featured mapping gps ($$). You can load up maps that show every street. You can ask it for directions to any address and it will guide you. You can select the type of road to use.

P.S. You can use it in your car too.
