Did this last year as my first century, but didn't get a ticket for the train back even though I signed up the day after registration opened.
Lesson: Get your ticket quick, they sell out fast.

Last year, the return train entry sold out in about 45 minutes, if I recall correctly. I was able to get through into the system in the first 15 minutes or so. Entries were completely sold out in 2 hr, 45 minutes or so.

I would really like to try something like this, is it too late to start training for this type of event?

this looks interesting, and sounds like alot of fun to do. Take the train down from Union Station, stay over at Irvine, bike down to SD. If i missed the train, call brother for a pickup and take the train up. Not a bad plan. hmmm..

Hey Liz, if you're serious I'll do that with you. Not the part of staying at moms but the riding part sounds like what I've been trying to talk my buds into for years.

I really just wanted to turn it into a double.

Lee we'll hook up again this year. Lety are you in?

Anybody else? This is about the best century ride there is in soCal. Very fun and realitively easy.

We don't have any beginners this year so we can go at whatever pace we want to. Although this is a ride that's better traveled slowly. If you get down there to fast you have to sit around on the pier waiting for the other riders and if you race down it can make for a really long wait.

I'm all set to sign up.

Pugz,
It's not to late to start training, but you have to put a few long rides (60 - 75 miles) before hand on the bike you plan on riding. 90% of the ride is basically flat or rolling hills. The biggest issue for your first time will be the position on the road bike (if thats what you are riding) and possibly muscle cramps. My biggest problem the 1st time was taking too must time at the rest stops, last time is ate and ran and it worked out much better (and there was more time for beverages at the end). The hardest part about this ride is getting signed up, this year it's on Fathers Day (your 1st!) so you have to be on-line at 7:00am to get train ride home.

I forgot some friends invited me to the High Sierra century. Now I'm torn. I'll bet I can get an entry into the Amtrak later when someone sells a spot so i think I'll wait before I purchase and decide later on which to do. I always have wanted to do the Amtrak though.

Are you talking about going back that day?? That's a double isn't it? I'd go back the next day...or catch the train the next day. I've always wanted to do this from my house in MDR and bike to my moms. That's be well over 100 miles. I may do this. Be great to do it with the gang!!

I've done this the last 8 years and only missed one year when their sign up page was screwed up. Every year gets harder and less time to sign up. There's a lot of folks that do this ride from out of state too. If they raised the rider limit to double what it is, it would still sell out.

I'll be on at 7, but I believe the site will crash or we'll see some problems.

I'm in with my gf. I was in right at 7:00 without a problem, either.

They allow a total of 1100 entries (700 with train return, and 400 without), and as of right now, there are only 78 train return entries and 209 without available. It's selling out as fast as ever!
