Nearly all velodromes have classes, and taking the class is often a requirement before racing.

I was hoping to do this this year because a buddy of mine has been trying to get me out there to Encino, but I recently got sidetracked and picked up mtn biking (along with a mtn bike) instead. I always feel guilty every time you bump your track threads.

You don't need a bike to take the class. They'll provide one. Then you'll be so hooked that you'll need to buy one to race.

Track racing is really fun. It is a great workout and really good for leg speed. SD velodrome has some of the best track coaches. If you want to check out the racing, every tuesday night they have races that start about 6:30. Plenty of present and past world champions and olympians race there on regular basis. For you people in the L.A. area check out the world class track in the ADT Sports Center. I believe Roger Young is the one running the program up there.
