Yes you, mr man on the trek riding along the beach bike path from playa del rey towards redondo this morning. You know who you are, with your orange reflector vest and tall white socks and your rack. You are the one last week who made a big show of pulling in front of me but then slowed down, practically forcing me to open it up and drop you like a hot potato. I suppose I should be ashamed of being proud of that, but it felt good anyway, and it gave me the motivation to commute much faster than I had been tooling along.
But then, today. I saw you pull out from your house, with your vest and your white socks. I had already been riding for half and hour, so I was nice and warmed up. Seeing you made me notch up the effort - you weren't going to get me today! No sirree. I cruised up "lance armstrong hill" near dockweiler and somewhere along the way I snuck a glance back to make sure you weren't there. Ha. No sight of you. I smugly dropped it down to a cruising pace, and took the time to enjoy those nice surfer boys along the beach, up so early to catch the waves. It must have been 2 miles later that I was snapped out of my trance by YOU PASSING ME! How did you GET THERE! And why o why did you again pass me and then slow down?? No way, mister, I will NOT stand for that!!! My reverie was over and I dropped the hammer, and you. I jammed in zone 4 for the next 10 miles. My own personal time trial like the Tour de France. I flew like the wind, absolutely terrified you'd pass me with that orange reflector vest. I didn't see you again, but I wanted to thank you for the motivation to make my commute a great workout. I even cut 10 minutes off my commute time thanks to you. I'll be looking for you friday, buster. ![]()

Hilarious!
So true. The games that people play on their morning commutes are pretty funny. I'm sure the hardcore roadie peleton all wearing team kits I saw out on Harvard st. awhile back got a pretty good laugh out of me. I tried to race them on my 20+ year old Bianchi touring bike with knobbies while wearing a backpack. They swallowed me up at a redlight. I got fustrated, dropped all the way to the back, and went around them Jesse Owens style. Too bad I didn't stay out in front too long.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with that voice in my head telling me these things when I ride my bike.
Every ride is like my own personal TDF. It would get exhausting if it wasn't so damn fun. P.S . I wear white socks on my commute to work all the time. I figure, I'm already wearing spandex, how much worse can I look. |

So your proud of beating the poor little Mexican dood trying to get to work on his Motive?
You should try beating the Mormons now those doods can ride.

I crush roadies all the time on that bike. Go off curbs, blast through water and mud, cut through dirt sections. They don't even know what to think except they are getting spanked by a pretty purple mountain bike. The white socks are because I wear shorts at work. |

I rode to work for the first time today and was chasing people all the way. It's like driving on the 405. Everyone hates geting passed. I spin out to fast on my SS road bike. Now I need to take the long way home!
46 to 56 miles a day should get me in shape!
