Totally serious. And when he does shorter rides he loads a camelback up with lead bricks.

Yep, I do a lot of long distance rides and have talked a few folks from this board to join me on a number of occasions. MTBMavic was my recent victim, although he looked and acted like he'd been doing them for years.

There's a a group of folks that do the California Triple Crown. (riding 3 double centuries or more a year). Google California Triple Crown and check out the website.

Long distance cycling is not for everyone, but I love it. Get use to pain it will be your friend for most of the ride. Look for about 12 to 16 hours of ride time, based on your fitness and your training. It helps to have cheeks of steel, but not entirely necessary.

A lot of our training rides are in excess of 140 miles so if you're home from school and want to jump in, go ahead and PM me. Well, get you set up.

If you can do 70+ miles and can stay on top of your calorie, water, and electrolyte intake (which assumes you know how much of each you need and what products will for YOU) you can do a century or a double. The only thing that will kill you is your own mental attitude, assuming the 3 other things I mentioned are there. Get a few centuries under your belt to prove to yourself you can do it and you'll be fine. Remember you must figure out a plan to deal with calories, water, and electrolytes though.

If done right it's not painful. Being on the open road, seeing what's new around the next turn or over the next hill, is totally addicting. I have found no better way to clear my head than long distance road biking. Life becomes so simplistic. Life comes at me a million miles an hour with constance problems to be solved all day long. On the road it's all about one thing...just keep pedaling.
