Question Question re grade

I'm trying to get a sense of percentage of grade but I don't have a GPS so I have no idea what 10%, 15%, etc is.

Does anyone know the grade on:
1. Newport Coast Dr, ocean side?
2. Newport Coast Drive, inland side?
3. Ridge Park to Signal Peak?
4. Quail Hill on Shady Canyon Trail (1st hill going away from the 405)
5. The 1st hill on San Joaquin Hills Dr starting from the Back Bay to Jamboree?

I think that #5 is the worst. Maybe equivalent to Modjeska Grade so, 18%?

Thanks. Hopefully someone knows.

If you have an account on bikeforums, send a message to user "Brandy." I remember her mentioning that she was documenting all the distances/gradients/etc of the climbs in OC.

NPC is roughly 6% on the ocean side.
similar on the back side.
Ridge Park, if it is the light at the bottom of the backside of NPC climbing up to the antenna's varies from 6 to 8 to 10 with a very short burp to 12. It averages 8-9%
If you are looking to get spanked ride Pacific Park from the County Court side it is about 9-10% continuously.
Nyes Place in Laguna claims 20% for 3/4 miles but my Delphi 6.0 computer never got above 15% - it is a pretty hard climb.
Park will have you gasping also - 10%
Thalia to Temple up to the top of the world varies from 8 to 14% and has a little relief ...sort of.

Hope this is useful and jives with others % understandings of these climbs. If not ...correct me please, and make sure the numbers are higher.

Ridge Park or Park Ridge, whatever it is, seems so much steeper. It can't be half of Modjeska Grade, can it?

Shoot, here I was being proud of myself.

% Grade = (Vertical Rise / Horizontal Distance) x 100

Soo if you go to a place like mapmyrun.com click the start of the hill and the end of the hill, click display elevation then you can get the average grade for a given streatch of road pretty easily. Mind you this won't help you much with max grade.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one... though I do like the elevation graph, I don't like that it doesn't follow roads..

(or maybe it does, I just couldn't find out how to do it in the first 2 minutes using it)

oh well use what you will...

It will follow roads, unfortunately it can be kinda twitchy. It took me a couple of sessions to master the pushpin technique. Have fun!
