Last week when I was in CA I remember seeing the group of Fixies riding on Antonio Parkway. I remembered them wearing vibrant colors and a purple bike.
Side note: I live in Tempe and the fixie culture is huge here. Every Tuesday night, there is a planned night ride up the Greenbelt (paved bike path) into Scottsdale and we hit up some drinks and dinner. Most people on the ride ride fixies. I've also heard there are groups/gangs of fixies that cruise downtown Phoenix late at night. I think that is badass!! Seems like most of riding buddies in AZ all have a fixed gear bike now. |

Thanks for reminding me guys. I have a fixie project I have been neglecting hanging in my garage. A neighbors was throwing out an 80's steel Nishiki bike last summer, needles to say it never made it to the dump. I guess I'll take it to the powdwercoater this week. Now I need to decided on a color.

STR is lacking in the fixed gear arena. I can TOTALLY imagine either seeing or reading a RR about a sea of STR veterans (all rocking the STR jerseys of course) mobbing a south OC pub on a Sunday afternoon =)

I guessed I missed that whole fixie thing when I was a bike messenger. I preferred this crazy idea called "coasting"

Fixies are ok. I used to ride one to work downtown in SD all the time when I had my pedi-cab business there. The "new-school" fixie kids are really ok once you get to talking to them. They stop by the shop all the time scrounging for any "take-off" parts that I might have laying around.
Overall I feel if there is going to be a "fad", I'd rather have it involve cycling. |

Being originally a roadie...I also have a fixie, however I flopped my hub to the SS side as I prefer a freewheel and brakes. The fad is to slam your crotch into the TT and slide to a stop. Yeh uhm no. Not on the roads... and I'd say most of those guys have gotten past the slide stop need as well. The fixed gear kids are last year....seriously, most have learned hard lessons. Also...don't think they are spending a lot, because they aren't. The fully DONE bike you can buy from Spesh or Giant or Bianchi runs 6-700 bucks. Doing it yourself costs 3-500. I bought an 84 Trek off ebay and put it together for about 500. They are fun to ride tho... its basically the same as the mtb'ers, except you're on the road. The guys with no helmets are going to learn the hard way, and our charity yesterday is in place for them.

I personally can not get behind this. I've tried a number of fixies and I always go away with a feeling of " that wasn't fun". I know a few of the guys that are 100% behind fixies just as they are 100% behind singlespeeding. Most these guy have mad skills. What I really think is they are trying to set themselves apart as a group, but now that it's starting to become more mainstream a lot of the core guys are doing other things. Like someone else posted, that's so yesterday.

this site is expensive, after reading this for the past few days it got me back looking for a fixie. Well, after an hour of craigslist shopping and $180, a vintage, 70's Steel Schwinn fixie has made it's way into my garage.
I will post pictures in the morning
