First of all, thanks to everyone who gave me advise in this thread. I made it out alive after riding 55 miles, much appreciated.
![]() Some pictures: ![]() Gaylord forgot the key to his lock, a last minute Home Depot run saved the day! ![]() My riding partners, Randall & Gaylord. ![]() Windmills! ![]() Gaylord went down shortly after the first SAG stop. I endo'd over him, fun! Are newer roadbikes significantly more comfortable than older models? I rode a late 80's Cannondale and it hurt after about 40 miles. I had to stand up off the seat every 5 minutes to make it bearable. What the hell does SAG mean? Stop and Go? Snacks and Gatorade? We had fun making up names for them during the slower sections of the ride. |

Newer road bikes can be much more comfortable. In the meantime, I highly suggest a carbon post, better saddle, and quality chamois. Any combo of the aforementioned will make a difference.

Your butt probably hurt because on a road bike, you don't really stand up too much as you would on a mountain bike. 40 miles on the road means a few hours of just sitting on the saddle. That would hurt on a mountain bike too if you weren't standing on the pedals frequently. I'm sure if you were to continue riding the road bike often you will get used to it.

I don't know your back ground on road bikes, but if you just started riding and it didn't hurt till 40 miles consider yourself lucky. But it sounds like your bike fit is off a little. Seats sometimes take time to adjust to and some seats will always hurt. Look around for other seats. I personally like Specialized seats myself, but Fizik are good too.

Good job on the ride!!! Yeh welcome to the world of the road...no plush suspension to take away the bumps thats for sure. Sorry about the crash too... consider a newer bike would have been more comfy but probably wouldn't have survived the crash. Carbon no likey pavement.

get some chamios butter squeeze a s#it load on your hand - introduce your hand to your taint (if they haven't already met). Lather up suit up - head out. Be sure to shake your buddies hand and watch him/her freak. Get fit for your bike. If your back hurt - ride more, do back strengthening excersises. Have fun suffering - it is part of the allure of road biking.
