I demoed a bike with campy record and i really thought that the duraace shift better. i dunno, i don't know much about road bike.

my trek 1200 has shimano sora in it and the last time I broke my rear derailleur, i took it to performance to get it fixed and i told them that i want the same parts.

they responded with, we don't carry stuff that cheap.

A roadie friend of mine says that Shimano shifts smoother when new but gets rougher over time but Campy gets better and better with use. That and it's sexy Italian!

Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about road parts.

Agreed. It's around the 105 level, if perhaps a step up. If you're considering between the two, think about personal preference of the shift points. While Shimano's all-integrated lever is nice, I like having the down-shift levers on the inside, side of the bar with Campy. And the whole thing looks cleaner with no cables coming out of the top of the levers.

One big thing to consider is that you can find Shimano parts just about anywhere. If you need Campy then you need to either have bought it already or do some searching if you are somewhere that you do not know the local shops.

As far as the Record not shifting well, I would chalk that up to set up.

Finding Shimano parts is insignificant since you can barely service any part of their shifters. You may have to order Campy parts, but the entire shifter is rebuildable. Not normally an issue since Campy outlasts Shimano about 3 to 1. The initial feel of Shimano is smoother, but Campy gets smoother with age. I own and ride both companies stuff and I'd choose Chorus over Dura Ace any day.

kinda off topic, but heard from an old mechanic:

shimano breaks, campy breaks in.

Marcel: what about SRAM roadie stuff? it does exist now.

I've never ridden SRAM stuff, I was asking because i was watching a bike on ebay and it has campy veloce, and i had no idea what they're comparable too.

If im' building a road bike, me think gonna go with SRAM RED!

From a cost standpoint - I'm sure you've seen Campy is quite a bit more $$. If Campy gets better with age I find it curious b/c you need to change out cassette's and chains regularly. I just changed out my Dura-ace cassette and chain - $350.00 It now shifts like butter; like the day I bought my rig. Campy was a heck of alot more money and aside from the sexiness of Italian I don't know if it is worth it. My friend has Campy Chorus 2007, which I was told is basically 2006 Record and he sounds like a rattle-trap coming down the road. Never mind the fact that his knee's stick out and he is built like a Clydesdale(sp).

SRAM RED is the latest greatest. Super light, quick shifting. If I was rich - my Dura-Ace would be in a box for Ebay.
