A couple summers ago I either brusied badly or slightly cracked a rib going off a huck on T&A in Laguna. I'm sure a few peeps remember this ride: Laguna Crashfest....
I was defintelty off the bike for 2 weeks, as any movement from mountain biking was painfull, and especially heavy breathing was painful. Theres not much you can do for ribs, but time. May I ask how you injured your ribs??? |

Had to sleep sitting up in a chair for the first couples of weeks..to painfull to roll over in bed. At the 4 week mark I was riding easy trails but I could not lift up the front tire without pain. It was a good 2 months before I felt 100%. Noel I hope you are not talking about yourself.
Pain medicines push the pain down the road as our body looses the ability to manage pain by itself. You get used to pain, when the pain medicine wears off the pain comes back with a vengance. Now if you just want to get loaded that is a different question. ![]()

Each person is different in the time it takes to heal. Sometimes the cracked or bruised ribs will take longer to ultimately heal. It also depends on age... older = longer. The last ones I cracked took a year to stop hurting completely... I was 62 at the time. You may think you are healed until you turn a certain way... or sneeze. Let's hope you heal quickly!
BTW: what's the story behind this???... inquiring minds want to know

I fractured my ribs last year. Like Dean, I had to sleep in a chair for the 1st week since it was too painful to lay down. I couln't take vicodin so I just toughed it out with plain advil. Coughing or sneezing hurt like hell and I couldn't take any deep breaths. It took about 6 weeks before I was riding on dirt again but I was riding cautious for about 2 to 3 weeks after.

they take a while to heal...
I just went through a cracked rib this summer…first week was painful to breath, sleep, turn, etc...... week 2 I was already riding on the stationary bike... week 3 I was road riding..... week 5 I was doing light dirt rides... took a few more weeks until the pain completely went away.. |

When I hurt my ribs it took about a month before it didn't hurt to sneeze or cough. It was about 6 weeks before I was back on the bike. The first few rides back it was a bit tight-feeling in the chest to breathe deeply but that went away after the first few rides.
Good luck! Heal fast... |

Anyways I slid out on an easy switchback section before the 500 year old oak tree, but I cleared the harder tech section later on. No witnesses and no pictures. I got the wind knocked out of me and it hurt a little bit at the time I think Dino saw me holding my ribs but there was so much more DH to be had and I felt good. Maybe it was the adrenaline?I was OK untill lifting my bike to put it in the truck bed and it felt like a knife was in my ribs but this was a week later??? I did the Adrenaline Demo bike ride went up Cholla down Rockit on my own bike then went to demo an XCL and followed CalEpic, Nam and Guero down 5 oaks which was OK I thought but when I got home that knife was back and the pain seemed to be more frequent. Im guessing Rockit and 5 Oaks rattled the old bones. ![]() I didnt want to post it cuz its nothing compared to Tani's broken hand and clavicle etc. I wanted to know approximately how long it would take cuz I wanted to ride this weekend. I went to the doctor today-10 days later and this is the result. ![]() Thanks again for the well wishes and responses. ![]() |

Bummer Noel, almost all of us know what it like to be off the bike. If you don't know what it like, keep riding you will.
Good advice above about resting and letting it heal. I did a OTB 4 weeks into a cracked rib...lost 4 weeks of healing. Bummer now is almost evrthing I hit the ground I rejury the same spot and it does not take much. ![]()
