But other riders going down in front of you is a valid excuse, right?

Seriously tho- I think at the most basic level, we all choose to mountain bike, therefore we are all responsible for our injuries

I would rather have the injuries I do, than to have never gotten on a bike and lived a mundane life

Can I have your bike?

Good thread, Gene. The trails normally don't get this loose until October or so- right before rain season starts, so we just need to be careful. We can still push ourselves but within reason. That said, I hope the injured folks heal quickly, and we'll see you out there!

my impressing people days being aggressive ended with my mid 20's. I spent enough time crashing dirt bikes and rolling trucks to justify taking it easy on the bike.

Good word Gene.

My ribs are still hurting from my Blackstar to Beek's crash over 2 weeks ago. That was just me getting too excited, going too fast, and not respecting the loose conditions. I have been much more careful lately. My ribs have been my reminder to ride safely.

I actually had to stop riding after 1 mile today because I couldn't take the pain. It's almost lucky that I get no riding this week because of a business trip. I need to rest my ribs for the O'Neill ride.

Exactly!

I “went down” mid-week, last week up at BB. Just plan stupid. On the 6th run of the day, on the third day of runs, playfully racing the others in my group along the top fire road heading towards the single track. Got off to the edge, were the even softer stuff is, and then in slow motion / a split second, the front end is getting away from me. I tuck in, and lay it down. A literal cloud of dust – poof! I get up, my friends saying I look like a fireman, black from head to toe. I feel OK, the bike, my new bike (see Porn below) is fine – 100%, but then I go to pick up the bike with my right hand. Oh, oh... Ouch that shoulder hurts! Funny, other than the shoulder, not a scratch.

I’m almost at the half-way point, between the bottom, and the top of the lifts... So, in true Fearless Descender / STR fashion, I ride on. Ride the single track down into town, ride thru town, climb up to the “Town Trail” and then across, back to the condo. I ice it up that night, but I “know” what is wrong. Get back to town the following day, and go to see the doc. He sends me to an orthopedic / sports medicine guy... Yep, he says... Now that there is a broken collar bone. 1.5 cm from the end, at the shoulder. Well, he says, nothing to do, just keep in the sling, and don’t pick anything up for 4 weeks, AND THEN, after that, give it another 2 to 4 weeks before you get on your bike. Ugh...

I haven’t had a big wreck in years, and haven’t been off the bike that long in, in forever.

Ahhhh well... I think I’ll cue up the “Collective” DVD, and pop open a Newcastle.

I agree. or if my bike was set up right for that kind of riding. I knew that my rebound was set too high. I adjusted the front fork a few days ago, but I didn't take care of the rear shock. Keep in mind, especially if you're trying new things, like jumps, your bike needs to be set up properly for that...more specific to dh or freeriding.

I have been looking for a bigger bike recently but haven't decided what I want to get. When I was in Mammoth I rented a bigger bike, but thought I would be ok for BB. Well I would have, if I would have stayed off the jumps. I take full responsibility for my equipment, and you should to when you show up for a ride.

Even though I crashed and went to the ER, I'm still ready to huck....well actual hucking might have to wait for a few weeks to be sure I don't hit my head. But I'm hoping to be back on the bike very soon.

Thanks again ~ cc

Still the higher and faster you go, the harder and more damage you will do.

I agree you don't want to bring a knife to a gunfight, but at the same time we are looking at a cut vs a bullet hole.

Yeah, and I don't want to have to send Guido to start breaking kneecaps.

Trust me... you won't be off the bike that long... you may not be hucking major air, but you'll be back riding before 6 weeks is up.

Very nice to hear someone take responsibility these days ... we seem to live in an age where most don't.. I'm thinking hot coffee at Mcdonald's!

Way to step up CC!
