My worst injury, which I don't recall most of was when I was in the 6th grade.I was at my aunt and uncles house and all us kids were out in front of the apt. complex playing basketball. Well the ball got wedged in between the hoop and back board. So i climb up the back of the pole and grab the rim to knock the ball loose, rim breaks and I fall 10' onto my face. Two broken wrist and teeth damage ( the first of many mouth injury's). So 4 hrs in the E.R pulling cement out my gums. Like I said I recall the up to the point of falling, the rest is from what my parents told me.At least I was out of school for awhile!

unless it starts bothering me, it will stay. there isn't a lot blood flow at the foot and not much skin to play with so typically they don't open the foot unless they REALLY have to.

In '91 I shattered my right hip(intertrochantor)into 9 pieces, and snapped off the femur while riding an atv(zigged when I should've zagged. The doc's used a plate,9 screws and 3 surgeries that left my right leg 1-1/4" shorter than my left leg.Left me leaning so far over to the right....that I had to re-register as a Republican, dohhh. At least I'm walking again somewhat normally.Fast foward to late August of this year, while finishing a ride at Bonelli park,I was sideswiped by a car near the dam operator's shack.Left me with 18 stitches in my right arm and a hematoma on my right hip,the same hip that I shattered. The doc told me that if the plate had not been there,I would have broken the hip!The S.O.B.driver didn't even stop.- Lloyd

I'm part of the Ti club too....a plate and 4 screws in my neck, degenerative disk disease from the neck to mid back, rheumatoid arthritis, and 2 other herniations in my neck (to be expected)....oh and I had heart surgery last year(still have a few issues). Point of the story for all of us....what doesn't kill us only postpones the enevitable. If you can get out of bed, keep doing it...life is fragile and needs to be lived TODAY and NOW.

What kind of heart surgery did you have? I had heart surgery and it will be 16 years ago in March. I had it to repair a ASD (a hole) and have been fine with the exception of one jump start since then.

well I've broken a lot of bones since, but my worst injury was back in 2002 when I fractured my right heel while dirt jumping.

After my accident I had to wait 1.5 weeks before getting surgery. my foot was too swollen to allow my Orthopedic surgeon to perform surgery. The surgery was close to 6 hours long and took on big plate and 9 screws to set everything back into place.

This accident was a wake up call for me. I had never broken any bones before this accident, so I figured they would simply put it in a cast and off I would go. But when I visited the orthopedic surgeon he said it was bad...real bad! When I laughed and told him "well, it's not like you are going to cut my foot off or anything?" and he replied "well, to be honest, it's always a possibility" I almost past out!! I had to lie down on his observation table – that’s how weak I got.

I was on crutches for the entire summer and was not allowed to put any weight on it that entire time. Plus it was hard because there are so many things I couldn't do, like carry food, get in the shower, driving, etc…So many things you take for granted. That summer was hard – all my buddies were riding while I was confined to my bed. Since childhood I've always been super active and can't sit still for a long period of time - heck it's hard for me to just go to the movies even with my girlfriend!!!

I worked hard once I got the okay and did my own PT. I made a miraculous recovery. Even the Dr. is baffled. He still doesn't understand why I didn't have any pain throughout the entire ordeal! He said these brakes hurt A LOT and FOREVER! You also usually loose a lot of lateral movement in your foot, but got 90% of it back. I'm super thankful...but I think it all has to do with your will power. I was ready to do ANYTHING to get back on the bike!

To this day it still hurts not and then...but I'm just glad I can ride again This accident is also one of the reason why I stopped racing and don't ride clips (the unclipping motion is the only movement that hurts my ankle).

here is an x-ray of my foot...to this day the metal is still in there
Toes are this way <-----------
Good God!... you must set off all the metal detectors in the airport at the same time!

OK OMR. I know you like to be informed.

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)

What It Is
The septum is a wall that separates the heart's left and right sides. Septal defects are sometimes called a "hole" in the heart. A defect between the heart's two upper chambers (the atria) is called an atrial septal defect (ASD).
When there is a large defect between the atria, a large amount of oxygen-rich (red) blood leaks from the heart's left side back to the right side. Then this blood is pumped back to the lungs, despite already having been refreshed with oxygen. This is inefficient, because already-oxygenated blood displaces blood that needs oxygen. Many people with this defect have few, if any, symptoms.

Surgical Therapy
Closing an atrial septal defect in childhood can prevent serious problems later in life. The long-term outlook is excellent. If atrial septal defects are diagnosed in adulthood, the defect is also repaired. Rarely, the defect is left unrepaired if there's pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). Your cardiologist can determine if the defect should be closed.

Ongoing Care

Medical
After an ASD is closed, patients need follow-up with a cardiologist. Only rarely will they need to take medicine. Your cardiologist can monitor you with noninvasive tests if needed. These include electrocardiograms, Holter monitors, exercise stress tests and echocardiograms. They will help show if more procedures, such as a cardiac catheterization, are needed.

Activity Restrictions
Activity restrictions are almost never needed unless there are associated problems that you and your doctor have discussed.

Endocarditis Prevention
Not needed.

Problems You May Have
People with repaired atrial septal defects rarely have any problems. Those who have palpitations or faint need to be reevaluated by their cardiologist and may need medical therapy. Also, if the ASD is diagnosed late in life, the heart may be less able to pump. This can require diuretics, drugs to help the heart pump better and drugs to control blood pressure. If pulmonary hypertension develops (which is rare), some people may need more medications.

Will You Need More Surgery?
Once an ASD has been closed, it's unlikely that more surgery will be needed. Rarely, a patient may have a residual hole. Whether it will need to be closed depends upon its size.

I had a valve repaired (sorry about the lack of tech terminology for that) and an ablation surgery for electrical issues (went into A fib repeatedly and was waking up in ER too much) HR of 200 plus = lots of vomit. I have a clotting problem too...so I was back in the hospital with a PE for ten more days after that. Coumadin for a few years until I went cold turkey on my own...don't tell my cardioligist. Screw it...the stuff balds you, and I'm a girly girl...I'd rather be dead than bald. (Snicker) (PS...yeh I am careful okay...no need to lecture)

also, when i got back from the camp, my parents told me they were getting divorced

they had already stayed at other places
its crazy how things change that fast in 3 weeks
