It is good to see him progressing so well. His brain swelling looks like it is almost completely gone. He has lost a crap-load of weight so I told him I'd sneak him in a Carl's chicken club sandwich as soon as I can (more smiles).

I love that he has fond memories of biking and happy that his bike is okay. .... His wife probably will resist him riding again, but riding again would be the ultimate recovery. Equal bravery on your part for being there.

Default 10/24 Update

Saturday, October 24, 2009 5:05 PM, PDT

For the past couple of days we have seen slow forward progression. The therapists (physical, occupational, and speech) work with him daily. On Thursday he worked hard and we made him try and stay awake. It is challenging to do - when the brain is tired, it is done and off to sleep he goes.

The speech therapist continues to work with the "talking" plug for his trach. Each day we try and coax him to talk - to no avail, yet. In addition, she is working up his tolerance to it. We are up to 10-15 minutes. It feels different for his as it pushes air through the vocal chords and is not what he is used to.

On Thursday, I put on his iPod and let him listen to some music. I saw him mouth a few words to a couple of different songs (Set the World on Fire and Can't Fight This Feeling). Music uses a different part of the brain and many times will "connect" before language does. We are singing a lot of "happy birthday" in his room.

I am tired. The nurses tell you that this road is hard, long, and enourmous amounts of energy. They were right. The amount of energy to be "on" - cheerleader, encourager, and to reassure him is a lot. I would not trade it for anything.

Today the Lord got my attention with this excerpt from a devotional "I built into your very being the need for rest...I have called you to walk down the paths of Peace...I have chosen you less for your strengths than for your weaknesses, which amplify your need for Me. Depend on Me more and more, and I will shower Peace on all your paths."

Rest and Peace only come from Him...may the Lord grant you peace wherever you are and whatever your circumstances.

I laughed and cried at the same time when I saw this!

I know it may be too early to tell, and I know to you the progress seems slow because you see him every day...but from the outside, it seems to me he's come a LONG way in just a little time! Do the doctors expect a full and complete recovery, given enough time and therapy???

His progress has been good it seems...it's the same thing with my dog. Hear me out...I have a 120 lb dog. When people meet him for the first time, they think he's HUGE! But I don't even think of him as big at all, because I've seen him every day since he was a little puppy!

So I'm thinking that since you see Ken every day, the progress seems slow...but looking at the dates of this thread, he is really doing GREAT! In such a short time, he's gone from a non-responsive coma to smiling about his bike, lip-syncing his favorite songs, and just about sitting up!!!

I still have this gut feeling...I think he'll be on a bike again in the not so distant future. But if not, it's a good thing he has friends and family like you to keep his spirits up. Kudos to you guys. The world needs more people like you!

...what about organizing a tribute/"get well soon" ride in his honor? I bet he would love to see pictures of the group that shows up! We could also use that opportunity to either collect get well soon cards, OR we could ALL sign one of those GIANT cards at the gathering so you can bring it to him.

What do you think? I'd help in any way I can. I just need to borrow a bike to ride as I'm sans-bike at the moment. lol. Let me know!

I think that is a GREAT idea. You should have seen him light up when I told him how many folks on STR were pulling for him. I'll have to think about when and where.

Would any STR'rs be interested in doing a 'Get Well' ride soon?

It looks like either Sun Nov 8th or Sat Nov 14th would be the best date for the K.R.A.S.H. (Ken's STR screen name) ride.
Ken's
Recovery
And
Swift
Healing

Any thoughts on the dates? How about the place? I want to make sure it's in a place that many people can get to without having to drive hours.

If anyone wants to take the lead on this one, that would be cool as well as I am going to be swamped for the next week or two (moving on Nov 1st).

Peace -

Tell you what gang....you guys throw this ride together and I'll volunteer to do some BBQ'ing. My family would be happy to be a part of this.

Great name! I say we just arbitrarily pick one of those 2 dates. If you build it, they will come!

Well, hot damn! You're in Irvine...so I thought somewhere near you would be best. Do you have enough room to host a gaggle of hungry mountain bikers?

If you're a go on the BBQ, then I'd say...Whiting Ranch. Good variety of terrain, not super difficult, and close to Irvine for the BBQ.

Once you verify, and unless I get a bunch of "Whiting Ranch SUCKS!" posts, then I'll start a NEW thread after the details have been confirmed. That way, this thread will remain the "update/get well soon" thread and it won't be derailed!

You can PM me as well. Can't wait for this, be sure to take pictures! I will buy and bring a card for the group to sign. But if you want to bring your own as well, PLEASE do that also!

Yah, that's so unfortunate. I hope he gets better soon and doesn't get deterred from riding again. Best of luck to him and his family.

I've gone down on Rock-It a couple of times. Once you get caught up in those ruts, it's hard to change course. Even though it's an overkill for the trail, I always wear a full face helmet to help minimize the damage. At the end of the day, we all gotta go back to something to work and family.

may sound odd...but what about riding Rockit in his honor Yes, Aliso is crowded, but if we get an early enough start we could be down Rockit before the crowds head in. With enough people we can even give other riders the 'heads up' of what's happening. thoughts?

I thought of this too. I'm OK either way, but I could see where this might weird some people out. Should I just start a poll to get the location and date decided ASAP? Otherwise, it might just bounce around undecided for weeks!

That would be pretty cool to get 100+ riders going down Rock-it at once! Although it could get a little dangerous
