Sorry to hear about the pain you're in. Healing vibes to you
![]() So, if I read it correctly, you didn't damage your archilles tendon in addition to the heel bone? I've always dreaded having my archilles snap on me. I'm sure that would result in a lot more down time than it takes for a bone to heal ![]() I've been off the bike for a week myself with what I think is a pinched sciatic nerve. Bloody painful all the time and I have an appointment with an orthopedic specialist on Monday. Maybe I'll join you in your garage to down a beer or two ![]()

You guys rock!
Correct Kevin, achilles won the battle and the heel bone lost. I'm told it is the lesser of two evils. I seem to be tolerating the pain better. Silly stuff like bathing and shaving are no longer taken for granted. Have a safe and fun 4th everyone and drink a few for me! |

Sorry to hear about the injury. Hope you heal up quickly!
I have a friend who did a big drop while snowboarding and landed on a hidden rock. He broke his heel in eight places... surgery and out of action for 6 months. Ouch!

One week follow up appointment with digital images in hand. Doc looks at them and says I need more x-rays. Walks in after the xrays and says, "you need to be screwed." I sort of expected it after looking at the digital images. Ya, titanium.
There is a relatively large (1/8" gap between the pieces, two of them, there are four). He says recovery will be faster because the bones will be clamped. Art, you're gonna be proud..I said, "like gluing and clamping wood?" "exactly." So there you have it, surgery with less recovery time. And a refill on the Percocet. The pain is still a big pain. Ride big this weekend for me guys! (and gals) |

It hurt just to read about your injury. I've felt '10' pain on one occasion, so I can only try to imagine '12' pain.
Heal up quick, but heal up 100% before you go back out. You don't want this injury to plague you any longer than it has to. ...and to avoid setting off the metal detector at the airport!

having shattered my right heel back in 2002 during a bike crash - I know the feeling way too well. in my case I was in crutches for almost a year. I had to hobble around for 3 weeks before they could even perform surgery (to let the swelling go down). there is not a lot of skin to play with on the foot, so you need to be real careful when performing surgery on the foot. blood flow there is not really good, so it's easy to "loose skin" like they say.
in my case it was impossible to use Ti since they needed to bend the metal as they saw fit. the heel bone is like a bee hive - so mine was totally crushed/shattered. this is what my hardware looks like...and to this day, it's still there. Good luck with the surgery/recovery mate!! ![]() |

I'll stick to mountain biking, thank you.
You never hear about people on bikes getting injured. Hope the pain resides soon and be careful with those meds, they just mask the pain.

And ya, the importance of keeping the swelling down has been hammered in to me. I was up one day and thought I'd go to the office for a few hours...paid dearly in pain that night. So guess what, I'm set up at home. Thanks for sharing your story, believe it or not it helps, as does everyone else's comments. It's a mind xxck for sure and keeping one step ahead of the bad thoughts is difficult. A sincere thank you! |

Cool pic, as long as its not of my foot. I hope your feeling better soon. I've been riding Bonelli a couple of times a week, thinkin' of you sitting there full of kirkland beer
.There are tons of rabbits and no coyotes. I wonder if they got rid of the coyotes. I also saw a king snake there last week. Anyway. Get well soon.

Thanks again for all of the support. I'm back on the bike for light duty...as in road or bike path. I knew there was a reason I built a hardtail. So now it's a 14 mile loop around town and through Bonelli with roadies whizzing by. Four more weeks and I'm dirt bound. Still have achy pain. Funny thing is I feel normal on the bike, it's getting off and limping away that I look silly. Neighbors are still shaking their collective heads...they don't ride and will never "get it." To my still injured friends out there, hang in there.
