I was riding the trail that runs along Tijeras Creek in Ladera Ranch and feeling brave when my friend called me out. He told me he wanted to see me hit a double-up behind the apartments and i (not being one to turn down a challenge) accepted.
I remember everything going smooth leading up to the landing...but that's where it ended. I "woke up" in a prickly bush with the most un-godly pain in my chest. I seriously thought i had broken a rib at the very least. Anyway, after 5 minutes of trying to take what seemed like baby breaths, i sat up and walked my bike (and my bruised ego) back to my buddies apartment. I later learned that my handle bars turned and that was actually what speared me and to add insult to injury, the guys who saw it happen told me i got thrown up and fell on the handlebars upon landing...i didn't just fall onto them. ![]() The picture above was taken less than 30 minutes from the time i went down...and if you look close you can see the entire side of my chest is actually showing signs of bruising. (Sorry i don't have better looking pecks...i'm still working on that.) It would be almost 45 days before the hard "lump" that formed from the accident would be almost completely gone. I never did go to the doctor though...probably not the smartest idea i've ever had. *Interestingly enough, not even a year ago i was in almost the same spot on the trail when i tried nailing a home-made jump made out of a man-hole cover we came across. After failing miserably, i remember tasting blood and dirt in my mouth...i also remember waking up and not being able to see, but i could hear my buddy yelling for me. That one left the helmet in pieces and me in the hospital. Needless to say, that part of the trail has officially been crossed off my list of places I frequently ride. |

I love jumping and doing drops but I have learned that overclearing and/or washing out is just part of the learning process. Hence, I wear some sort of plastic chest protector for that very reason. The last time I overcleared a drop I did the same thing. Thankfully I only knocked the wind out of myself but no piercing or bruising, just a little sore and scared!!!
I had this on at the time: ![]() I have since switched to this one: ![]()

Must be a bad week for jumping. I nearly killed myself at whiting on a jump last week. The culprit was under-inflated tires. My front tire folded under, the rim caught, and I went flying onto concrete like fireroad.
My buds did tell me that if landing a jump with your head and shoulder was how a jump is judged then I would have had a perfect 10. My shoulder still hurts and scapula area too. I did get x-rays and nothing broken. I've been riding for 20 years and that was the hardest i've ever crashed. I've had worse crashes, but none of them had the lasting affects of this one. I hope you feel better soon.

yeah, i wear a flack jacket (pink). i had a gnar crash in fontana w/the gerls right after complaining that i was overdressed (flak jacket, crash pads & full face). everything that i had ridden that day had been rather mellow, but then i followed sauce off a small jump near the top (she was pinning it & i was trying to keep up) & landed nose heavy... REALLY nose heavy. i think she said i somersaulted. needless to say, i seriously knocked the wind out of myself & even gave myself 'rug burn' on my forhead from my helmet. afterward, i was SOOOOO thankful for being 'over dressed!'

...sorry to let you down, i didn't know you were looking for stimulation; this wasn't posted to get you off, it was posted to show the bruising. (I figured someone would have said something eventually...oh well.)
FTR, this happened almost 45 days ago and the bruising/internal bump that formed (approx the size of a tea-bag) have just gone away. I couldn't believe it... |
