Default Fractured Thumb

Well add me to the DL, I was descending on some singletrack in Santa Monica when a tree branch reached out and touched me. It pulled my bars sideways, as I went over the bars my thumb(right hand of course) got caught between the shift lever and my bar. Landed hard on my left side, luckily missed the 3 rows of jagged rocks by a couple of inches.

So now I have 2 fractures in my thumb by the joint, and because it is the thumb the ER doc says I have to see and orthopedic specialist. I already appreciate my thumbs alot more just having one working thumb.

Edit: Man it is hard chicken pecking with one hand and typing right with the other.

Heal up quick.. hopefully the fractures don't affect your joint in the long term.

Nearly three years ago I dislocated my thumb chasing a friend down the Brand ski chute firebreak. He was a pro downhiller on an 8" bike and I had no business trying to keep up with him.... and I paid the price.

Dislocations take longer to heal, and mine took a good six months before I could change gears with the sram thumb shifters again. My friends remember when I used to have to flip my hand and push the levers with the palm of my hand for those months. It worked but was a hassle, and got me through those six months.

Now my thumb joint is permanantly swollen, but pain-free, and I have about 80% of my mobility back, enough to be normal.

Hopefully your break will heal faster than that... keep us posted.

Default Update

Well I saw my Orthopedic surgeon yesterday, he let me stay in the soft cast with the condition that I am super careful and ice my thumb. My thumb is still pretty swollen still, but he said if I protect my thumb and ice it I should be able to take the soft cast off in as little as 3-4 weeks, so hopefully when I see him next week he says things are still on track.

So hopefully in about a month I can start riding into work again, and then get back on the dirt.

Best if luck with that, I did mine with a sledge hammer trying to pickle fork a stripped crank arm. The joint healing properly is almost as tricky as learning to wipe and brush your teeth with the other hand.

Care to elaborate on what kind of shifter/lever combo we should avoid?
