Default disclocated shoulder

I dislocated my shoulder in a kayaking incident.

I don't think I tore anything...I am hoping I will be riding again soon. Anyone out there riding soon after a dislocation?

A video was made of the run (I was in the red kayak/yellow helmet). My bad run wasn't recorded...but they did get a fellow boater reducing the dislocation.

Sorry to hear that man. I went in for shoulder surgery in Feb, I had a 90% tear of the labrum. Last week was my first ride.

Hope you didn't tear anything. If not, it shouldn't take too long to recover and get the strength back.

Sorry to hear that Geno! Ohh, the pain. Brings back memories. I broke and dislocated mine in Nov. I was in a sling for 2 months. Still in physical therapy 2x week to avoid surgery. Much longer recovery I'm sure, but I don't want to go under the knife. I'm back to riding but still have a lot of weakness where my muscles are torn. And honestly have to get over some of the mental stuff still holding me back.

Dean and I were talking about Camp Nelson again soon, hopefully you'll be recovered and can join us. Much healing vibes out to you and a speedy recovery!

Ewww, oh geez. I just watched the video. Made me want to barf up my lunch... Can't believe you even moved it without major pain medication.

Geno big bummer, my dislocation popped right back in and it was 3 weeks before I could lift my front tire up over things. 5 weeks before it felt 100%.

Nice video....

How can you tell if you tore something or dislocated anything? I have crashed countless times with either side of my shoulder and all of them are pretty hard. I have not visited a doctor, NOT ONCE and it takes about less than 2months before the pain is completely gone. for instance 2weeks ago I could barely lift my left arm just to hold my steering wheel so I could drive home, but then after a week I was back on my bike again. as of now it still hurts if I lift my arm higher than my shoulder, does that mean I tore up anything or dislocated something?

Drop D - They knew my shoulder was dislocated because they could see it.

At first I didn't know what was wrong...My entire arm was in horrible pain. I thought my arm was broken...possibly in several places...which is possible considering the beating I experienced. Once they cut off my $400 drytop...they could see the dislocation.

They said my nerve bundle was being pinched thats why the pain was so bad. Once relocated the pain went from a 8 down to a 2 as long as I didn't move or lift my arm.

2 weeks out I can lift my arm about 90' to the side and forward.

I am going to see an orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday...I should know more then.

I had surgery a while back from dislocating during wrestling season in High School. Just a couple months ago I went over my bars and it popped out and went right back in. I feel for you. Its not fun.

Its been so long since I had Physical Therapy, do any of you know of good shoulder exercises for the shoulder to strengthen it up? I feel it is very loose a lot of the times.

I've dislocated my shoulder 3 times and by now my family knows how to pop it back into place. Everytime I seem to be pretty resilient and come back relatively soon. Good luck and sorry to hear about it.

Good video. I can appreciate kayaking, but I am not a "waterman" -- is there such a thing as a "dirtandrocksman"? At least on land if you screw up you can usually lie there a minute and not worry about drowning! It was real fun to watch the video-- until the segment w/ your shoulder -- your expression said it all. It looks like the guy who reduced it really knew what he was doing. Good luck and a fast recovery to you.

Dislocated my right shoulder after my front tire failed coming down the Luge. Realistically, you're looking at 3 to 4 weeks minimum. As much as you want to ride, don't or you'll delay your recovery. I suggest riding a trainer if you have one. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Yea I feel very lucky he was there. He was in a different group. He was very assuring and confidence inspiring.

I cannot imagine what 2 to 3 hours of hiking and driving (some dirt road) to the ER would have felt like with it still out. It would have sucked.

In todays sue happy world...I am glad he helped me.

4 months after surgery and I still have physical therapy 3 times a week. Almost have full range of motion back.

At least another month of PT left.

Only way I knew was after 3 months it still hurt, maybe a little more. So I got an MRI and went in for surgery.. Cartiliege will not repair itself, muscle will.

Went over the handlebars 12 years ago. It was a good 6-8 weeks before I felt ready to get back out there. Of course recovery time depends so much on how severe the separation. I felt pain to the touch for a couple of years and but now the only pain I get is arthritic type pain after playing softball or football. Sometimes I forget it even happened. Good luck on the recovery.

Sorry to hear. I dislocated my shoulder in Fruita about a year ago. The sooner they get the shoulder back in its socket the better...in my case it took more than 5 hours due to an unusual dislocation and having to go to a 2nd hospital to get it done. Pain virtually disappeared after they put it in place. Was back on the bike for some bike path rides after 3 weeks and progressed from there...think I was riding easy single track after 4 weeks. But physical therapy lasted three months and that was painful. Full range of motion and strength takes awhile to get back. Good luck

I dislocate my shoulders many time. Only once did I have to go to the hospital to put it back in place. DO NOT FORCE IT BACK. I usually sit, leaning forward, get in a position where my arm does not hurt as much (fore arm leaning on my leg). I then try to relax all the muscles in my body concentrating on my breathing to give me something to focus on. I relax my muscles starting by my hand, and move up to my shoulder. If you stay still, you usually can relax enough where the bone will slip in place (the weirdest feeling you ever felt). If you force it back, you will damage the tendons, don't do the Lethal Weapon trick if you want to ride your bike again.

I have learned to avoid movements that could cause a dislocation but it still happens once in a while, last time was surfing in Maui and the time before that was going down Tunnel in SB (popped back in and finished the ride)
