The pain is minimal and intermittent and the strength and range of movement are pretty good right now. I have 3 more weekends of racing, then hopefully surgery so I can be ready to go for the Brian Head NMBS at the end of August!!!!

If it's not so bad then why not finish out the season instead of risking a surgery where..y'know..something could happen even though I'm sure it won't!!

From Denmother:

Unfortunately it catches, gives out and sends sharp pains in my knee cap whenever it wants to. There is no warning. I also have arthritis, edema and bone spurs. Hopefully after this surgery I will be a candidate for the injections that lubricate what cartilage I do have left. I'm considering this "preventitive maintenance". The plan is to come back stronger!!

Standing up and hammering are the worst. Because DS and DH are predominately done while standing you can see my delemna. The largest window with no races is June-august. In reality our race season runs almost all year long!

So sorry to hear that Nancy. Boy that Ernie Maxwells was costly. My rib is still healing, about another 3 weeks I was told till I'm released off light duty. I understand the need to keep riding. I started riding inside of a week, just be careful not to injure it more. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear about your knee Nancy. It was scary seeing you on the ground after the crash. You are in my prayers.

Thanks!!!! I scared myself that day, too! I didn't think much of the injury until 2 weeks ago. I am not sure if that particular crash did the damage, or just added to a previous injury. I have crashed and fallen on my knees alot over the years, so who knows!!! I appreciate the prayers.

Default Surgery scheduled

I will be having an arthroscopy on June 17th. Here's a description/picture for your viewing pleasure.....

Arthroscopy involves inserting a fiberoptic telescope that is about the size of a pencil into the joint through an incision that is approximately 1/8 inch long. Fluid is then inserted into the joint to distend the joint and to allow for the visualization of the structures within that joint. Then, using miniature instruments which may be as small as 1/10 of an inch, the structures are examined and the surgery is performed.

This is usually done as an outpatient. On the average, most patients are able to walk without crutches within 48 hours. An active rehabilitation program is then initiated in an effort to rebuild the muscle strength in the muscles around the knee, thus relieving the stress on the knee. In most patients, an exercise program is started by the seventh post-operative day on Nautilus type equipment. Patients are usually on some type of activity restriction for approximately 6 weeks after surgery, or until rehabilitation has been successfully completed. Obviously these general guidelines must be individualized and may change during the recovery phase. Arthroscopy is much less traumatic to the muscles, ligaments and the tissues than the traditional method of opening the knee.

I assume it's standard practice to grade your knee post surgery. My knee doctor took some extremely clear close-up photos during surgery to show me the damage. He used a scale from 1 (baby knees) to 5 (bone on bone).

I graded 5 in three areas and a 4+ in the fourth. He conceded he only put in the 4+ to keep my spirits up - yeah, that helped.

Good luck on the 17th !

Hope it all goes well, Arthroscopic surgery is actually pretty cool, you can watch them do it most the time too. Are you doing your PT at the Sport Clinic too?

I tore mine about three years ago. They did orthoscopic and clean it right up. I was down for a couple days and then back on the bike lightly for rehab. I have not had a problem since. Good luck to ya.

Yikes, nice demo job on the interior parts! Heck, if it was all clean, you would have lead a boring life. z-z-z-Your knee condition sounds like my elbows, I had/have the same issues. (less the meniscus) The clean up work is well worth it to keep the locking away.......... I had those cleaned out, ask for picture copies of the interior destruction from surgery, I have a cool picture of the rocks in my joint, and missing cartilage on the ends of the bones, it's trophy material... luckily it looks like you don't have to have any ligament reconstruction, that's the time eater........my thinking is get 'er fixed up so you can keep on going! You want to ride in your 60's right? Make it quality riding!!! What's a couple of months in the big picture now? Nothing really.........We can come back at our exact same age!!! Good luck, and heal fast, do what the Doc says so you ultimately get back faster, rather than re-injury....(why they casted me!)

Oh my, Nancy! I must've been blind all this time and just saw your injury report. Good that you're getting surgery. With these minimally invasive techniques, you'll be back in no time. I've had five surgeries (shoulders, hand, spine), so I know how much of a bummer it is not being active. Hang in there!
