Default Lesson Learned

So I rode San Juan today with Dubjay. Pedaling up was slow and steady. Hung out at cocktail briefly since it was colder and windier than we thought it'd be. Then comes the fun part...the ride down. I caught a sandy area and slid out on my arm.... lots of blood.. ended up going to the urgent care facility to see if i needed stiches. Doc said no...still not sure about that one since i keep soaking bandages with new blood.

Anyway, lesson learned. I think I'll ride with elbow pads for a while. I'm stuck off the bike for a bit while this scabs over...

"Just a flesh wound"

Keep it clean, and moist with something like Neosporin or Brave Soldier ointment

Keep it clean and it wont leave a mark. SJT can be a bit brutal at times.
Heal up quick and lets do it again.

i'm supposed to keep it wrapped and covered with this paste. i figure the scab will take a lot longer to form since it's not dry. ah well.

silver sulfadiazine is usually prescribed as a topical antibiotic cream for burns. If your Doc said to use it, I'd follow their instructions to the letter. However, for deep abrasions I've had, I like Lana-biotic (BPN + Lanacaine) for local pain management. I would keep it covered with non-stick gauze pad and the "breathable" mesh sleeve. Once it starts to scab over, really slather on the ointment.

Just a little road rash. Treat it like the doc said and you'll be fine (wait 'till you really crash hard )- Lloyd

It looks like my ass from Los Pinos yesterday. I'm riding today! The paste and bandage are probably just so it will heal better and not leave as much of a scar. Just ride and let it heal naturally. Chicks dig scars!

I think they changed the name to "lanacane with antibiotic" or something, but yes. You should be able to find it at any big drug store

BTW, I'm personally thankful that all you got was a little road rash. crashes like those often include the broken collar bone/dislocated shoulder, etc...

i'm becoming an expert at crashing in this exact fashion. A majority of my bike exits are on the right side...with my front wheel washing out to the left. in fact, i fell twice...and both times were on my right arm. Dubjay says I need more weight on the front tire which is definitely counterintuitive when i'm barreling downhill.

I'll be back on the bike soon, but pads...elbow pads are now gonna go on with the helmet...every ride

i'd do what the doc says and be careful of using too much topical antibiotics. they can inhibit healthy tissue growth, increase the chance for fungal infection, and could lead to bacterial resistance. elbow pads are definitely the longterm solution, although i usually seem to have my best crashes without them.

Hope it heals well and quick.
I too now where arm guards with 90% of rides, and I'm pretty sure its
helped me avoid trail rash already!

Do what the docs says, and all will be right.
