Default Willie's new "cankle"

So I sprained my ankle on the first half mile of the Rwanda ride. I finished the rest of the ride in pain, but I finished nonetheless.

Basically, the first climb is this very short and slightly steep hill. A bunch of people stopped towards the top and as a hurriedly clipped out my left foot came down on the ground sideways. Kevin (xhuskr) caught me before I fell onto my side and Nancy, Roger, and Jeff quickly turned around to make sure I was OK. I couldn't talk for a minute because of the pain, but I tried to toughen up so I could finish the ride. And that I did.

Jason and I went to a crowded urgent care today, and thankfully nothing is broken. I have an ankle brace and crutches, but I'm hoping I won't need them for too long. I'd post pictures of my ugly swollen foot, but my cankle would probably break my camera. That and my camera battery is dead.

I'm mostly upset just because it was such a lame injury, but at least it's not broken or anything. My sternoclavicular dislocation in October was much worse than this, so I'm not complaining too much.

Willie, I can't believe you finished the ride, and in as much pain as you were in. My hat is off to you sister. If it had been me, I'd have headed back to Cooks for a hot cup of coffee and the warmth from the heaters.

Congratulations on your successful accomplishment!!!

Way to go finishing the ride Wiliie!
Was that on that steep three switchback section as you enter the N.E. corner of O'Neill? I rode that a few days before the Rwanda event, and again the afternoon after, and was amazed at how it looked like it had been swept. Methinks a lot of folks were spinning tires there!

Heal fast!

Hey Willie,
Because of the need to keep off your feet, vacuuming, dusting and cooking should all be avoided at all costs. If you play your cards right, you might parlay the injury into obtaining a permanent housekeeper and cook.

Awwww... Poor Willie!!! An old friend (my orthopedist) made a recommendation that I have used numerous times over the years, and I think everyone with a "Cankle, Gknee, Wrizt should try if your medically able to:

Take 600-800mg of Ibuprofen. What ever you're used to (I take mine with ale), wait about 20 minutes for absorption, run VERY warm water in the sink/tub/jacuzzi/hot-tub, soak said twisted appendage while SLOWLY adding HOT water. Try to soak in water as hot as you can stand it for 10-15 minutes. After that, elevate a relax your hurt-part for an hour or so. The idea is that the heat promotes circulation, but the Ibuprofen keeps it from swelling. As long as I haven't gone out and re-injured or inflamed it, whatever I hurt usually heals completely 2-3 times faster than just wrapping it up or bracing it and hoping for the best.

You really shouldn't have finished the ride. Please try to stay off your feet for a few days. You just let me know if your man needs his butt kicked for not taking good care of "His Queen"

wow, just more proof that women have a higher pain threshold than men... don't think i would have been able to finish that ride with a sprained ankle.. i've been through that pain and it sucks to pedal..

also, Kevin aka xHunkr you got quick reflexes for a 39 y/o

for finishing the ride! I'm glad I was nearby for you to fall on Heal quickly...you've got the right mindset and even a cool pair of shades you won so you can hide any pain you may be feeling. Hang in there...you'll be back on the bike (or even walking) with no pain soon!

Dam Willie. Way to tough it out. Keep that ankle elevated. At least with ankles, there's lots of tendons surrounding the joint you can strengthen to regain stability.

Heal up quick and feel better soon.
