First, I want to thank everyone that helped me off the hill today on the Push-a-Kona ride. I write to you with a broken right clavicle. Totally sucks.
Today on the Push-a-Kona ride I was feeling very good and confident coming off 5 Oaks with a pretty fast and clean run. Just so much fun. Everyone was smiling at the bottom so the energy was just great. I wanted Stairsteps to be a repeat so I left a bit of space and then sent it. The top section was working out so nicely and I stopped just after that to watch people and it was just so much fun seeing the different riders and bikes tackle that terrain. When I went to finish the trail I was really excited and went pretty quick into that weird rutted thing. Everything seemed to be working and bang! My front end got hung up and I got flung pretty decisively over the bars. It's strange how in that short time between lifting off and touching down that you can figure out how to brace for impact and calculate the forecasted damage. I figured on a broken shoulder or perhaps a wrist if I managed to get my hands out there. Very close: broken right clavicle. Stoked!!! I writhed about in agony for a few minutes trying to get back to earth and then shock sort of set in when I realized that my forecast was pretty close, bad in any event. That dizziness faded and someone asked if "it was broken." My answer: "I am certain of it." This is the first time that I have taken such a fall, having something significant (not just a toe or finger) break literally in half. I could feel the bones floating around in there. I am very disappointed in myself and very upset with the prospect of having ruined my 08 season, BUT I am very happy with how gracious and helpful the remaining group of guys was. I am also very stoked at how my friends and family just instantly sorted me out. When things are back in order, I am going straight back to Stairsteps and I am going to pin that section. I can't wait. In the meantime I am going to post more crap on here to pass the time. By the way, it's not that bad. I thought something like this would just be super gnarly. Just agonizing. It hurts, but not that bad. Right now I am just in a weird brace, but the orthopaedist might have other ideas. We'll see. Hopefully no surgery. Please. Thanks again for helping me out. I can't wait for the next ride. I wish everyone exciting and safe rides. Cheers, BR

![]() Funny you mentioned how in a "short time" one has an amazing ability to prepare themselves for the impact ahead. Witnesed that today (San Gabriel's). They just tucked and rolled. I am sure we will see it a few times in Fontana. Recent trip to Mammoth I ate it. My body told me to pull a Superman... my brain instantly told me to pull my arm into my chest and roll. Dusted myself off and kept riding! Should have seperated my shoulder. Can't explain it! Can't wait to read your Return To Stairsteps "PIN-IT" Report! ![]() Again, get well soon!

Sorry to hear ya got wadded up. I hope you get well soon and that whatever the prognosis is (surgery or not) things work out well and quick for ya.
I deffinitely concur with how past experiences can immediately get recalled and get you out of harm's way quickly when things turn bad. On one of my bails at Mammoth, I knew I was going over and just over-exagerated the motion, tucked, and rolled away from the pile. It wasn't a concious decision, but I did note identifying the fact that I was going down. The second time I wasn't so lucky, but that happened so quick i didn't have time to realize I was going to wad it up. Sure enough, no time for the ol' brain to figgure out what was going on, and I got drilled pretty hard and ended up with the fracture in my wrist. Good luck on the recovery, Chris |

A good soaking in beer should straighten things right out, I would recommend getting your revenge with a shovel so no one else has to find out the hard way. If you need a hand with that (no pun intended) put me first on the list.
Get well soon. |

Sorry to hear about your injury. There were a few mishaps up in the San Gabriels today including my endo otb on Sunet trail and another rider's close call with a bike going over the cliff on Middle Merrill. Heal up soon.

Damn! I was right in front of you when you fell. You almost made the ground shake as much as Maxwell when he crashes. Heal quick!

A bad week for STR folk. First Shannon, now you, plus I heard Evil Chocula took a nasty faceplant at Bootleg that required stictches to the lip.
