My first ride was on the Loop but I seen lots of sweet piktures from Whiteing Ranch. I was gonna ride their but my Pinto won't make it up the toll road.

From what we saw before evacuating, I'm pretty sure that nearly all of Whiting is burned. I watched as the Serrano side burned, and from the reports and smoke patterns, I'm pretty sure most/all of the Borrego side also went. It burned up and over all of Dreaded Hill as well.

RIP Whiting Ranch.
Now lets hope for steady, gentle rains this winter so the recovery can begin.

We will miss this place, but we look forward to helping to re-build when appropriate. I am also happy no lives were lost. Now... what to do with the arsonist once he's caught...

I'm speechless, for once. I've hiked Whiting for years, used to go there alone "to get away" and could close my eyes and not hear a thing but the trees. I know it'll grow back in time, but it's so sad to think about all the animals that may not have made it. What a loss, but thankfully no lives.

I did see one picture Royster71 emailed me that showed the beginning of the trail at Whiting still looking green.

Then in another shot it showed the Borrego canyon sides (up by the houses) toasted but still pretty green down in the bottom. My hope is that the fire raced through there and left the green riparian habitat somewwhat intact.

Only time will tell...

I drove past the Portola entrance around 6pm: The sides are charred while there's still some of the brush right at the entrance, though that was still smoldering.

I'm happy to say that it looks like many of the old trees along trails in the Serrano side are intact. Hopefully this thing hopped around down in the depths of those canyons and left some areas untouched.

Cautious optimism will be my approach.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad to hear some semi-positive news. I would also like to take part in any replanting effort that takes happens later on.

Right now I'm just pulling for the firefighters and the people who've been displaced by the fires. Hope everyone is alright.

Sadly...I heard that there was one killed and 12 injured.

I don't know the details, but I read it on the crawl when watching the news yesterday.

Whoever it was...RIP. And to the injured...Get Well.

There was a correction on TV today, there was not a death.

That's good news. So my well wishes go out to the injured, the displaced, and the firefighters working 24 hour shifts.

Whiting was my first ride when I first moved into the O.C. area . I've only been a resident of Foothill for a short time and it's sad to see this go up in smoke due to some a-holes negative actions (may a mountain lion have this person for dinner) Either way I am down to help out where I can to hopefully one day restore the trail to what it once was.

Doesn't look as bad as I anticipated so far. If you have any more updates/photos, keep them coming!

Who should we look to for habitat restoration once the park is re-opened? Will trail repair/maintenance be something that is prohibited by the general MTB public and limited to County employees, or will there be a way we can help out?
