Default Saddlebag Lake Trail, Tioga Pass

It is not easy finding any dirt to ride anywhere near Yosemite. I noticed on a map that a old road followed the east side of Saddlebag Lake for a couple of miles to the Hoover Wilderness. The ride started at a little over 10,000 ft and rolled along the lake never gaining or loosing elevation. The road is no longer a road but one sweet singletrack with scenery to die for.

    Default Hoover Wilderness:

Got to the wilderness boundary and a backcountry ranger lives at the trailhead. Stashed my bike in the trees and hiked up to the pass. It is a true shame that this section of trail is not open to bikes. It is a gentle grade, hard packed granite that is as pretty as some of the stuff I have rode in Colorado.

    Default Yosemite:

Took advantage of the free National Park day to head into Yosemite. I knew what to expect and that was a ton of cars and people. So I parked at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge and rode into the valley, it really is a shame that a National Park is so unfriendly to bikes. After being in the wilderness and not seeing anyone all morning it was way too much. But it is so beautiful I am glad to have visited again…hard to think of a prettier place.

Nice Dean. Looks like clear skies out there...what kind of temps did you have on your rides.

    Awesome pics, Dean.

Both Saddlebag Lake and Hoover Wilderness look familiar... I think that I may have been backpacking in both areas during the 70's, while in the Boy Scouts.

Nice pics Dean. Did you eat at the Saddlebag Lake General Store or make it to the 20 Lakes behind Saddlebag?

No I brought food not thinking that there would not be a place to eat.

I should have studied the map better but I was looking for dirt to ride. Did did a out and back to Odell Lake...passed 4 lakes I should have just complete the Lakes Loop. This is the place to go if you are a fisherman.

I always fished there and never even thought about bringing the bike. Thanks for the idea!

Default Fern Lake Trail: June Lake, CA

My map showed that I could ride up the trail for maybe 1 1/2 miles before the Ansel Adams Wilderness...wrong only maybe it 1/2 miles before the sign. In was 500ft in 1/2 miles so I was not riding anyway...point is leave the bike behind. The lake is crazy pretty.
