), you didn't really run away from the class. If I remember correctly, you won by 3 or 4 seconds. Considering that you're a bit older than probably most of the semi-pros (I do know of a few in their 30s also), many of them are younger.Let me back up to some of my work history. I used to work as the competition director for a motorsport sanctioning body. One of my responsibilities was to approve riders' request to turn pro as well as approve riders who wanted to drop back to expert. And like you explained with some classes not crossing over between organization, we also had that same issue, but with riders from different countries, and so it was a bit challenging to put the racers in the correct class at the world finals. So although I didn't take all of your recent racing history into consideration (I didn't study it), I wouldn't have a problem with you as a top expert or as a semi-pro, because you're a legitimate fit in both places (I won't go into the explanations of the classes). You'd probably win the expert class a lot, but I don't think you were sandbagging. Myself on the other hand...I did my first mountain bike race at SRC in March (#5). I won the beginner class by 16 seconds (fortunately, the second place rider was in front of me), with a time that was also 8 seconds ahead of the winning sport class racer in the same 35-44 age group. I may be ok to show up in sport, but if I were to show up in beginner, I would definately be a sandbagger. I'll likely just race expert. |
