Default Jam & Coast Super D Challenge, Hulda Crooks, May 9 2010

It’s that time again! Time for another edition of awesome Hulda Crooks Super D racing. But since this is our first race for 2010, we’re bringing you two races for twice the fun.

Presenting the “Jam & Coast Super D Challenge.”

This event is a grassroots, free of charge, stage race that consists of a traditional Super D race, which will be in a time trial format. A few climbs, but mostly downhill. Good flowy sections, singletrack, fireroads, and if you want…jumps.

However, the second stage, which is new for this year, will be a Chainless race, that will have no climbing, but will be challenging nevertheless. This race will be won by the rider who is the smoothest, most willing to stay off the brakes, and who is the most precise.

The cumulative times from the first and second stage will be combined and the person with lowest overall time will be crowned the Jam & Coast winner!

Like always, we are having the event on public trails so safety is the number one concern. But like always, this event is free, and put on by people who just love to ride. We are grassroots, we have paper plate numbers and we use two stopwatches for timers. But we have tons of fun.

Where: Hulda Crooks Park parking lot
When: May 9, Sunday, meet at parking lot at 8:00 AM
How: Show up to parking lot, the whole group will cruise up together to the top of the course for the traditional Super D. Riders will leave one by one, time trial style in one minute intervals. After everyone has finished stage 1, everyone will cruise together up again to the start of stage 2. At the top of Stage 2, riders will remove their chains. Those without Power Links, chain breakers will be provided. Once again riders leave one by one time trial style. At the end, we will have brand new pins for riders without power links. The times will be tabulated, and the winners will be crowned.
Categories: Open men & Open women, that’s it. Keeping it simple.

Here’s a link to our previous race if anyone wants to check it out.

    Default Very Doable

I have not finalized the courses yet for this coming race. We try and mix it up so we have different courses for each event.

I was thinking of starting the Super D above "Return of the Jedi" so we could hit that trail and the course would follow down till the parking lot.

For the chainless race, I was thinking of starting above Jackrabbit and running it down till about 4 Corners.

Once everything is finalized, I'll run 'em both on my Garmin and post up the route. I also may be able to borrow a Helmet cam from a buddy and post the video of the course here.

Default We have done hardtail class

We've done hardtail class for the other 3 races. We actually had a good turn out.

I'm all about democracy. If the people want it, we'll have it!

We can have Hardtail Men's open, Dual Suspension Men's open, and Women's open. There usually is just a handfull of girls so I don't like watering down their category.

It would be cool to include that new stretch of single track down closer to the bottom after 4 corners.

It would also be cool to make all the jumps mandatory. You don't necessarily need to jump them, people can roll them if they want.

If you do use "return to Jedi", everyone should have to do all the berm shots and not cruise down the single track that goes down the middle.

It is cool that you guys put these on...I am looking forward to this.

    Default SS Class?

Do we get our own Single Speed class? I can't be competing against you sons of bitches with gears.

Wait, mandatory berms & jumps? Are you trying to handicap me just because I'm a crappy rider? I Object Sir!

    I have questions.
What about a vintage class (for my 1990 Mantis fully rigid) or a old school coaster brake class (for my coaster brake Schwinn)
Can we use different bikes for stage 1 and stage 2?

    Default Good Ideas guys

Mantaman and AtOurGates, I like your idea about a vintage class and SS class. Would be nice to see some Mag 21's or purple ano parts out there!

Unfortunately, we don't always have a lot of hardtail peeps showing up. Sometimes the hair splitting categories water down the whole spirit of the event which is "Show up with what you have and ride and have fun." If we get a lot of people with vintage stuff and or SS, we may just have to do a vintage and/or SS category!

I was purposefully vague about using more then 1 bike! If you think that will allow you to have a lower overall combined time, then by all means, use two bikes!

Hopefully the route will be finalized soon. I can't always get out there. 80 hour work weeks kill me

Is this Mothers Day Weekend? If so then I may not be able to be there, any idea of when it will be over? Maybe another weekend is better?

    Default Course Profile

So I pre-rode the Super D course yesterday and took some pictures. Here's a preview for those of you who want to check it out. This is for the first stage. I will post up the Chainless stage in a few days.

The course starts at the Green stripe and ends at the Red Stripe. Here's some info:
    Length: 2.87 miles
    Total Ascent: 112 feet
    Total Descent: 808 feet
As you can see, the biggest climb is right around the start but then it's mostly downhill all the way to the finish, just like a true Super D should be.

    Default Some Course Pics

    The Start of the course

The start of the 1st climb, the top is the crest you see at the top of the picture.

The start of the fun stuff! You descend along the trail in the middle of the picture, then curl around and come back on the singletrack on the right side of the pic.
