x-post from mtbr so-cal board:

I trained and trained and trained since last November.
Got the flu 9 days out...flat on back for 2 days or so.
Slow recovery.
No ride the Saturday before.

Started the event feeling at least glad to be back on the bike but wishing the last 4 months of training would deliver.

Long story short, I shaved a blistering 4:28 off last years time.

realizations:
- i wished i'd ridden my SS again
- i'll never be using hammer perpetuem again
- i've increased my LT a good bit since last year
- my wife increased the amount she beat me this year by almost 50%...on her SS...while barfing all day.
- wind is better than mud
- wind is better than cold
- people who drop their gu wrappers and tubes should be beaten, then have their face covered in gu and placed in the sun next to an ant hill.

I second that! I was pretty bummed at all the gu wrappers I saw along the way. Its not a marathon where they have an army of people cleaning the streets afterwards. Those friggin' things are still up there. Why not put the wrappers back in the pocket you just pulled it out of?

Since this was my first time doing the CC I wasn't actually sure what the tubes were there for. First time I passed one I was like "Oh no, somebodys tube fell out. Maybe I should grab it and earn myself a free tube?" I got the hint after the third tube on the ground

I know what you mean. Maybe it's how good it feels to finish.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Keith was stopping and picking up the wrappers along the way.

I accidentally dropped both my tubes. Apologies! I'd never ridden with them inside of my bottle cage before ... it turned out to be a really bad idea.

BTW: Rider #195's name is Jonathan Chillas. Sorry to hear he cut the trail...

Before you drag someone's name in the dirt perhaps you should be more informed. What if the last post had the wrong number?

If this "shortcut" is the singletrack detour on main divide I think it is, I am guilty of taking this trail as well as #195. I have done the VQ since 2002 and only learned about this trail when I was passed by some guys who were behind me. As they were wearing brown jerseys with Warrior's Society written on it I figured this was the trail. Since then I have taken this trail (well i missed once as it comes up fast). I think it does give you 10 secs, but it is technical. If there is some specific mention of this trail being closed to the race course then my bad and the same for #195 and whoever else takes this trail.

For those who are really strict check out the DVD of the 2004 VQ. Cameron cut the last corner where Main Divide meets upper HJ. Where do you draw the line?

You’re right! I noticed that the last time I watched that. I’ve seen others do the same, but not me, no no, wouldn’t even consider it.

Chill, it's just a fun ride.

Upper Holy Jim was redirected for the VQ last year, it used to go straight down and not loop as it does now

Yea, I bought the DVD so I could see the course (when I had never been to the area). When I saw that an expert could washout (fall?) I thought "Oh carp, how tough is it?"

If there's no course ribbon go ahead (at your own risk).
chillin'

BTW At the end of UHJ the monitors were yelling "sharp right turn", I was thinking WTH I've got the whole road to turn in, do I need to front wheelie the turn?

depressing...

in discussions with my wife...turns out she was "only" about 30 minutes ahead of me at the turn where the CC becomes the VQ....THEN she put another almost 30 minutes in to me in the last loop....on a singlespeed.

i'm still trying to figure out how she did the Coup portion in 4:45 or whatever it was...

it's not the beating me part...i've had a few years to get used to it...it's the how much part! i was hoping to put some time in to her this time...instead...she got faster!

I was just speaking to Manny about VQ - he trained like a demon this year and knocked almost 1/2 an hour out of last years time!!! Cameron had a better strategy apparently - my strategy would be to survive west horsethief !
Manny has the best attitude out there, next year he said!
