Only got in 2 or 3 runs for the DH practice, today. I really like the course. People are falling left and right down the waterfall. THAT, is going to be the place to be tomorrow.

4th place (out of 10) in Men's 27-34 Sport.
![]() First XC race in a while that I haven't wanted to quit halfway through or swear off racing all together. I missed most of last year so it was a blast to get back out to Fontucky today and see all the familiar faces. Didn't know what they did to the course, even heard rumors of not having to climb the pavement (twas a lie!). We had 10 of us today. In the past, err, last year and one age bracket lower, we had a max of 5 guys, so it was great to be out with ten other guys today to see where I stand. I raced well enough, still need to learn to navigate the downhills in fontana better and pedal in between descents. There was a lot of people out there having problems today, I know 3 guys that got flats, and there were plenty more pulled over that I saw. Had planned to practice DH but was tired, didn't want to crash and hurt myself, didn't want wait in any more lines, and wanted to end the day on a good note. Quite happy with 4th place and the way I raced/felt. LOTS of the usual Fontucky racers out there today, tried to say hi to anyone I knew. Good times. |

Got out there in the 35+ Sport...felt pretty good but not nimble enough to keep up the pace through the rolling singletrack that made up the middle 1/3rd. Would gain ground on roads up/down only to lose it through the fun parts...I blame the rebuilt rear of my GT LTS-1 using the Coupe Deluxe instead of the "hopefully rebuilt and soon to be received via UPS" Super-Deluxe shock for not being able to keep speed and mash it through the rolling singletrack. A great course though, with enough places to pass with just a little bit o' patience. I prefer the shorter, multi-lap courses since I don't ride the area and by the time lap 3+ comes along, I've got a pretty good idea of what's coming and my times speed up.
Bailed on the Super-D...not "old school downhill" enough for my taste. My "old school" is from the early-mid 90's Team Big Bear and Mammoth Kamikaze, where acceleration and braking were key, before the advent of 6" travel gravity monsters. Special shout out the the numbskull profanely screaming to get by (and ultimately cutting his own line down the hill) the short line of riders on lap 2 at the last sandy single track descent before the last section of neighborhood wall...if you're that itchy to push a line of riders helping a 10-11 year-old kid get down a sketchy section, move up a class or two or take some Ritalin before you do that...or someone's going to "oops, didn't realize you were there" when you least expect it.

I was practicing today and really enjoyed the course. The course is plenty flowy, but requires good cornering skills and an appropriate amount of pedaling (not considering the wall there).
Unfortunately, I went back for that "last run" and I guess I followed too closely and got balled up with a guy on that big rock platform. When I dropped back in, I got hung up and went over the bars at like 2mph straight onto my head--I didn't even let go of the bars. I was pissed! Shortly after on my way home, I started getting a bit whoozy and my vision started to get a bit spotty. Then I got really weak and started getting hot flashes and then I barfed. So, I went to the doctor and it looks like maybe a concussion (not sure). So, stolen bike to start the year and a super f**king lame OTB to start my race season. Sweet! Sucks for me, but anyone else racing DH should have a great time punching those berms on the lower part of the course. What a blast! Good luck! Pin it!

Well, I was one of those flats David referred to. I ended up 11-1/2 minutes behind the first place guy in Sport 43-50. I kinda doubt it took me that long to change a tube!
He (Clint Campbell) got 1:09 something. I was mid-pack @ 1:20 something.I saw a lot of people down. Fortunately, no-one seemed hurt. Minor crashes and mechanicals... What's with all the passing controversy? The way I figure it, if I am the better rider, I ought to be able to get around you. As long as you don't move left to block after I say 'On your left,' it's all good! I'm not about to waste my breath shouting and being a dick! |

tis true. congrats
![]() good DH course too. like dhwebkook (get better meng) said, plenty flowy (especially for a fontucky course), not too flat, lots of neat features (crazy rock wall thing...), and a good, techy steep part. I was really liking the course on my last couple of runs, so I'm hoping things stay that way tomorrow. I need all the help I can get, seeing as I bit the bullet and went expert ![]() david, did you end up sticking around and flogging the slopestyle? didnt see you out on the hill ![]()

DH Practice today. Course was fun, but Don says he will be enforcing the ride-arounds for the Sport and Beginner classes - which means the course will bypass the two most fun parts - the rock step-up pyramid and the drop before the berms. I understand it, but I'm bummed. I'm not good enough (yet?) to move to expert, but I would like to just for tomorrow.
![]() Brad (Webkook) - sorry to hear of your misadventure. I thought I was the only one who did slo-mo endos. I hope your 2010 improves dramatically.

That's definitely going to be the place to watch. There were a lot of people standing around watching that part of the course, and I laid out a great crash for 'em. Course overall was awesome, the lower section is a blast. Too bad I'm out of the race now due to that wreck, I kept riding and now my hand is too swollen to hold the bars...literally, couldn't even get my pads off. Good luck to all ya'll tomorrow!
