Always have problem clicking back into my SPDs when I need to do it quickly, like in a race. Thinking of going Crank Brothers and am in a delima as to whether to go with minimalist Egg Beaters or the Candy's. Ease of entry critical, but don't want to be swimming in float either. Any preferences?

i rode spd's for a year (have a couple free pairs if anyone's thinking about going clipless) and recently switched to eggbeaters on one bike and candies on the other. It takes a little getting used to, though it's the same concept as spd's.
I highly prefer my candy's just because that small platform helps out quite a bit |

I have both and I prefer Candys. I like having some form of a platform in case I misclip starting. I can still put my foot on the pedal and rotate it. The EBs are nice and light and small but when i misclip with them my foot slides right off.

I haven't ridden SPDs, but I can tell you that Crank Bros. pedals aren't perfect for entry. They may be better than Shimano, I don't know. But I have had trouble clipping-in on occasion. If you go with Crank Bros. make sure you maintain them better, and practice more than I did or you'll still have the same problem.
BTW the vast majority of the time I had no problem. Only had problems when I really felt I needed to be clipped-in. I guess in your case, that would be every race!

I'm ridin' Acids now after busting up my right Beater on a rock the day I broke my wrist (Mar 24th). I like their semi-platform size -- feels meatier than just the spindle of the plain Beaters. Easy to get in'out of for me as well.
![]() I ride SPDs on my Titus roadie and like them as well, but they don't clear as easily so I don't like them on the MTB. shud |

I ride Egg Beaters on the SS cyclocross and love em, and I run Candies on the Dawg and love them. I guess it's what feels better for the application. The Egg Beaters seem to have a lot of float compared to the Candies but are easier for me to get into.

If that's what you are deciding between, I say Candy. I just went back from Candys to SPDs.
(I have red Candy Ti's for sale if anyone wants them, $80 shipped with used cleats). I prefer SPDs over CBs, but it's just preference. That cry baby DeeZee says you should use Time pedals.

I changed over to the EB's earlier this year for the weight savings over my SPD's. It is a little bit different with the EB's to clip in, but like the SPD's, it becomes second nature once you learn the personality of the design.
IMO, the Candies are more like the SPD's in that they have the platform so you don't have to be as precise in where your foot is to clip in.

What type of problems do you have clipping in on your SPDs?
I'm just throwing it out there, but could it be the cleat clearance with your shoes? I use SPDs on all of my bikes and I don't really have any problems clipping in. I just place my foot in the general area and it just clicks. |

I'm look at cleat clearance too as a possible problem. I've been riding on spds for the last 6-7 years and only recently had problems with a new pair of Shimano M300s. I notice that I just spend too much time fishing for the clip. Probably just a case of getting use to them.
But in any case, always looked at the CB candy and egg beaters so it may be time to switch anyway. |

CB EB's 4ti – ez to clip in, ez out, and great lateral movement, very light weight, no hucking, or jumping, there is a max weight limit
CB candy’s – its seems the contact clip in is smaller than the 4ti, It took me several tries to hit the mark, ez out, good lateral movement Shimano DX - easiest to clip in, hardest to clip out, weight penalty, but tough to break |

EggBeaters on all the bikes.
The 4Ti are the easiest to get in/out of (probably due to the coating on them) I really dislike the Candies but did put an old reject pair on the back of Miss Kitty.
