Our competition in Leadville...

"Lance Armstrong registered for Leadville 100

The promoter of the Leadville 100, a 100-mile mountain bike race in Colorado, told a local newspaper that Lance Armstrong has registered for his race and is training nearby for the August 9 event.

"It's huge for the race, of course, but even more grand and more meaningful to our community, because now the national and the international spotlight will be on Leadville," promoter Ken Chlouber told the Summit Daily.

Armstrong had said he was going to do Leadville last year but then pulled out citing a scheduling conflict. Floyd Landis did race last year, coming second to mountain bike legend Dave Wiens.

The paper reported that Armstrong has been training in nearby Aspen, Colorado. Acclimatization is key at Leadville, which starts at 10,200 feet elevation and tops out at 12,600.

"(Armstrong's) coming to win," Chlouber told the newspaper. "I’m sure he’s got his guns strapped on, and he’ll be coming full blast ... We’re going to put him on the front row, right besides Dave Wiens, and I expect it’ll be a shootout right from the get-go."

Lance Armstrong finishes 2nd in Leadville 100 race

By ARNIE STAPLETON – 1 hour ago
LEADVILLE, Colo. (AP) — Lance Armstrong finished second in the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race on Saturday, pushing six-time champion Dave Wiens to a record time.
It was Armstrong's first competitive bicycle race since winning his seventh straight Tour de France in 2005. Wiens took the lead from Armstrong with 10 miles to go in the 100-mile race and finished 1 minute, 56 seconds ahead.
Wiens crossed the finish on a flat back tire in a time of 6 hours, 45 minutes, 47 seconds, shaving 13 minutes off his old record. He set the record last year while holding off Floyd Landis.

Damn, you were flying. Most people here have no idea how hard this ride actually is. Not only is it hard but arguably the hardest mountain bike one day race there is.

I was really suprised Lance didn't beat Dave. My hats off to him he is a great competetior an a superb athlete.

Arguably. My wife's done Leadville and the Cascade Cream Puff . She say's the Puff is notably more difficult. Lower elevation yes, but about 8k more up and TONS more S-track to deal with vs. fireroad/doubletrack.

Plus, if I can finish Leadville...it ain't that hard.

Padre, you and Madre are no slouches. I believe you can do a lot more then just finish Leadville.

Luke, are you related to Dave? For those who have followed Dave Wiens, it's pretty cool to see him still riding this well - although the Leadville 100 is his baby (like that other race was Lance's thing). Congrats to all you STR riders who finished the Breck and Leadville races.

no....not directly. he also has a german mennonite family background so i am sure there is a connection somewhere down the line. shear coincidence that we share the same passion...i got a hold of him via email earlier this year to say whats up. he seemed like a pretty cool dude.

it is definitely pretty awesome to see the guy still tearing it up though!
