I notice a 1 bpm increase in average heart rate for every 2 degrees over 80F...that is the only crappy part for me about riding as I dont like riding in the 175-180 range.

I live the Palm Springs area - it was 118 yesterday. No chance of riding once the sun is up. I rode during the week at 5:45AM by the end of my ride at 8AM it was already 90+. I saw a noticeable jump in average heart rate throughout the ride - my average jumped nealy 5bpm overall and my HR recovery wasn't quite as solid as normal. When sprinting I noticed a higher output. I usually stay in zone 3 and 4 but was up in zone 5 more than usual. I tried to stay hydrated - burning through my whole pack which i usually only drink about 1/3 of. The heat does have a noticable effect especially if you like to ride hard. It sounds ironic but I think you need to warm up slower in the heat to let your body acclimate. I didn't do that on my last ride.

Madre and I left the house at 6:20am today in Ladera Ranch.
We pedaled to LCWP and did a loop through El Morro and back home.

36 miles, 4k ascent. Also, it was hot. I weighed 212lbs prior to the ride. Post-ride and pre-lunch, I weighed 204lbs. I drank about 70oz. I'm glad we were done by 10am.

Damn, that's pretty cool and he rides a Heckler!

Lytes in the bag, regular pull on the nozzle, and lots of ice (what a great treat)! Once I added ice to the bag i never went back...there is something magical about a chilly sip from the nip

Those of us who live near the beach have it a little easier, as the mornings stay cooler longer and it begins to cool-off in the evenings earlier.

For those of you who are riding inland in the next few days, be careful. The weather forecast is calling for 100+ degrees. From what i've seen, the symptoms of heat exhaustion usually catch folks off-guard and it can be serious. Anyone who rode the Traverse or anywhere else that day knows what i'm talking about.

When i'm riding in the heat, I drink more water and take Endurolyte tabs at least twice an hour. Truth to tell, I try to avoid riding when it's really hot... it's just not very enjoyable for me.

Just a reminder to look out for your pets in this heat. KEEP the drinking water in a shaded area, use misters, get a plastic kiddie pool for them to jump in. Maybe even a fan? Avoid hiking with them till it's cooler I had a friend who had both his dogs die on one hike very sad. If walking and you notice them trying to get under cars or shade that's the first sign to wet them down to bring their body temperature down. Have a great day all !!
