That's because, by and large, internet-bulletin-boards are tools for concealing the truth.

I think some people would take exception to calling a wedge of cheese or white bread "real food".

Two hours is not a long workout, it's just a warm-up.

The advice for "real food" applies to someone with at least 24 hours to recover which implies more than one day between workouts. Someone who works out every day can make use of supplements and the glycogen window.

Depends on how I feel or what I feel like eating.

As far as solid foods, I've done 12 hour solos on fig newtons, nutter butters, oreos and pretzels only...that's what I felt like eating. I've raced days in a multi-day smiply on various fruits. I've also done the complete opposite with gels, energy bars and drink mix.

Yes to both questions, gotta be flexible.

Pre-ride, post-ride, during the ride...I eat what I feel like eating, I've found what works for me.

True enough. Here's the thing though....there is no market for figuring out "real food" supplements. Joe Marketing Schmoe won't make a buck if you figure out that you can puree bananas and honey and have a great homemade gu, or that powdered egg whites mixed in orange juice is a superior recovery food (i'm making this up btw). These "real" food alternatives to supplements certainly exist, but there's no incentive to market them, or even to do much research on them.

The one happy exception is the research into chocolate milk as a recovery food.

What? Corn dogs are my usual mid ride snack.

The one thing about real food is that it doesn't have preservatives and other man made stuff in it. Who knows what all this goofy crap they put in foods these days will do to us in 50 years. An organic apple just seams like it'll gel better with the body than something in bar form that has a half life of plutonium.

A jel pack is a lot more fun and easier to eat mid workout than a bunch of grapes, however.

I think the whole point is that you do not have to be a marketing sheep and buy carb-enhanced-protean-rich-racer proven-MBA approved- colorfully packaged-lastest product. You can find those nutrients in real food.........and take real food.....with you on your rides.

I used to buy into that crazy BS. Yes if you are doing a long distance event you may not feel like eating a big meal. But with your pre ride and post ride you do not need all of that fancy stuff.
