Default More slower climbing or shorter sprint climbing

I was out on my normal hill climbing training ride Tuesday night and got to thinking what would be gained from doing a longer slower climbing intensive ride versus a shorter sprint like climbing ride?

The longer ride is 20 miles with 3K of gain and will take about 1:45, the shorter ride is about 12 miles with 1,200 to 1,500 gain. I would do the longer ride between 60%-70% max and the shorter about 80%-90% max.

Keep in mind my training goals are for long distance (100-300 mile, 6-20 hour rides).

Yeah I guess that's really what it boils down to.
