One thing I've been doing with my diet has kept my weight relatively the same but slimmed my waist down and increased muscle mass. I'm an EMT and after every call I do 25 pushups (first set regular, second set decline, third set incline, fourth set wide grip, repeat). I usually only make it through the cycle once in a night but it has helped out a lot.

I also eat predominately protein and lots of fruit and veggies. Carbs are still present in my diet, just a little less of them. I also eat about six or seven times a day with smaller meals each time.

Just another opinion for your quest

A little over 4 years ago I was 125 lbs. I started working out, taking in whey protein and doing CytoGainer.

One shake of cytogainer with 12oz of whole milk was almost 800 calories. I did three of those a day, in addition to my average daily food intake. It took a little over 2 years to pack on 40 lbs of muscle.

Then I got into mountain biking. Since then, I've dropped a good 10 lbs, and cannot seem to break the 160lbs mark again, no matter how hard I try. I gave up on the CytoGainer over a year ago simply to save some $$ each month.

I struggle to maintain weight (~150) and have found that I have to eat at least 5 -6 times a day to have any benefit. Eating three really big meals did nothing but make me feel lazy and did nothing for maintaining weight.

As others have said, Peanut Butter is a great snack. I have a sandwich with tons of Honey and and a shake made with Soy Milk, fruit, protein powder, Flax seed and Wheat Germ.

I eat this just before bed and it helps.

I can't really add anything then what's already been said here. Plenty of protein and no fast food!

Update: As of earlier this week, I weighed in at my normal carrying weight of 160. It was a tough two or so weeks, having to eat pretty much everything I laid my eyes upon. My efforts were split between healthy foods (almonds, a&j sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, etc) and caloric dense crap (B&J Cookie Dough ice cream, magic shell, fries, endless Mexican food, etc). After making a concerted effort to eat healthy foods for a few days, I quickly discovered that it was just impossible for me to take in sufficient calories to function at work AND gain weight.

I started working in some push-ups and pull-ups at my apt these past few days. Aside from losing all strength I once had, they feel great. My first foray onto the bike will be at the SD marathon on June 1 to cheer on a friend. My dr follow-up is the following week, so I am eyeing June 7 to be my first real ride back on the bike. Depending on how that flat road ride goes, I may post a beginner ride at El Moro for the following weekend.

Thanks again for the help and advice everyone. You guys (and gals) rock. Happy Friday Eve.

Andrew
