Fire near Idyllwild

For those of you familiar with the Spring Challenge course and surrounding area, does it look like the fire burning out there is close enough to jeopardize the race?

It's supposedly in a fairly rugged area near Apache peak.

Looks pretty darn close to Hurkey Creek on this newspaper's Web site.

Sounds as if it is burning up toward the top of the mountain and over to Palm Springs-ish?

They didn't mention Hurkey (though it's on the map), so I'm guessing it isn't close enough to close trails, but air quality may very well be an issue if it is still burning.

Like a dope I called the number. Angela answered (I was expecting tape I think, not a 'real' person). She was very nice. I asked after Hurkey Creek and surrounding areas and she had no idea what I was talking about (even though Hurkey Creek Park is on their little map -- I did not point this out to her).

She seemed to think the fire was way out in the wilderness away from everything, and was not endangering any buildings or people.

So, in short, who knows?

Reports have the fire burning towards the east, which is better than to the west.
