Default 2008 Olympic MTB course (w/pics)

Beijing China 2008 Olympic Games Mountain Bike Course. On my Macintosh, Safari & Firefox browsers didn't work to view the 30+ pictures of the course but Opera browser worked fine.

Wow. According to that site, there's not much elevation, but the distance is a beeyotch!

Length: 4,190 km

Elevation: 224 m

That'd be a whopping 735 feet of climbing over 2603 miles! Methinks I'd trade out the knobbies for something a bit faster rolling! And don't forget to hydrate!

Well, you'll find out who the best athletes are, vs finding out who the best technicians are on a course like that...

For those of you that are using FireFox, you can install this handy extension, that will basically open Internet Expoleror inside FireFox. So when those pesky pages come up that won't work in FF just click a button, without having to open a new browser.

I think it's going to be a matter of which rider can survive the air pollution. Read this CyclingNews.com story about a 2007 pre-Olympic race on the same course in which only 8 of the 45 or so Pro starters finished the race because the smog was so bad.

(not that I'm saying I would have a shred of a chance against any one of those riders but c'mon!!) That's like a time trial course on a very small dose of steroids.

I gotta go with sdyeti on this one. The course is totally lame, not an MTB course at all, even if it does have SOME dirt on it.
If I want to know who the "best athletes" are I'll watch road cycling, the thing that makes MTB great and makes it what it is, is the fact that in order to do well you have also be one of the "best technicians".
If I cared at all about who the "best athlete" was I'd be willing to watch someone ride a stationary bike with an SRM on it... personally I get a lot more excited seeing a master technician at work (AhhemmAdamCraig)! Excuse me.

I think they're using the European punctuation. 4,190 km is 4.19 km. Cross bikes could be a good choice on that course.

Anyone know what previous courses were like? I have no reference for what Olympic MTB courses should be like. This one does look like the Fully loop in a lot of sections.

This looks like the worst of it:

Look how narrow that is!! The riders are going to have to have some good boxing and shoving skills.

Razor sharp bar ends will make this like the running of the bulls.

The combination of bar ends and that netting is scary!

Haven't we learned from skiing? Those nets to a great job of stopping someone only after any limb or apendage not held close to the body is either ripped off or snapped in to. The crashes on these sections are going to be gnarly.

Edit: That's picture 21 from BrewMaster's post.

WOW, talk about kiddie gloves! I have a tougher course in my back yard (Archie Foothills) and whats with all the Man made perfect line Rock formations on the downhill sections?? I was thinking that'd be a great course to use the rigid SS on, almost like a mountain bike roller coaster. 4.2 kilometers, and about 750 feet of climbing. I wonder how many of them are going to be running slicks?

I think those hills are steeper than they look. And don't forget, most pro XC racers can't ride anything remotely technical, such as a trails with rocks, descents, irregular surfaces, etc.

Ducking and running...
