yup, same thing happens to me when I "over-train". My heart feels like it's trying to work its way out of my chest and I just feel restless.
After long endurance races, I would use ambien to fall asleep as I know my body needed it, but it was too wired to do on it's own. Not that I'm recommending it, but it did the trick! (am I at 25 posts yet????) |

Forgot to mention that I usually take "cal-mag". It's a mix of Calcium and Magnesium that is very relaxing to me... kind of "granola" (hippie-new-age-healing-ish?), not my usual thing but it works for me.
You can probably find it at a health food store. |

FWIW-
Pretty normal to have a restless night after really excerpting yourself. Fatigue, short/long term can cause this. I've heard your body may still be 'leaking' a little adrenaline sevreal hours after you do your recovery. Like your fight or flight mechanism is getting tickled or some such, and, you may not be fully recovered by the time you hit the rack. I chalk it up to my system is still 'sweeping up' free radicals and replentishing glycogen stores upsetting my melatonin levels and causing restlessnes. It's critical to do a proper 'recovery' after super-hard/long efforts. Maybe try upping your Lean Protien intake a bit, with your normal recovery loading (normally 4 gams carbs to 1 gram protiens w/in 2 hours of stopping) and maybe take a teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia to help settle the legs and such a few hours later. While doing the Simi ride or alpine training rides my post-ride recovery was wild rice or mucelie (sp?-pasta) and tuna with a lil avacado hard boiled egg and a pinch of salt, maybe some mango or other type of salsa to jazz it up. I did this right away as soon as I was off the bike- kept it in a little cooler in my truck. Lots of water was key was well. Main thing is lean protiens and clean carbs in the right amount/ratio ASAP (w/ in two hours or sooner) in order to stimulate the propper insuline response. Watch the saturated fats and simple sugars because those can backfire on you and kill your recovery for the next day. Everyone is diff but one thing is for sure, when you really drain the batteries a propper recovery is all that more important. (beer, burritos w/ all the trimmings, pizza are NOT propper recover foods- damn it ) Be consistent with your diet- you are training your gut as well as your legs! I was looking at the profile on the ride you guys just did....good one! Make sure you are getting enough energy on those rides as well etc...ya know, Gu etc....Half a Cliff bar, banana (solids) every hour or so helps give your system something to 'chew on' w/o loading you up or stealing too much blodd from your muscles (for some). Restlessnes happens to almost everyone, I've heard and experienced, when 'raising the bar'. ![]() |

He has been known to drink excessive ammounts of strong Belgian beer between the hours of 10pm and 1am. This is post-consumption of at least 10 espressos between the hours of 10am and 8pm. Without the beer, Diamond has been known to stay up until 4 or 5am. |
